Re: Spinoff of a post on the Pregnancy Board: Hand Me Downs...
My kids live in hand me downs. When you have two you take it whereever you can get it from. MY SIL had a friend who had twins and she gave me all of her stuff up to 2T and now my SIL has given me my nephews stuff up to 3T. It has saved us a fortune. The times i do go out to buy them anything it winds up being $40-$60 for two outfits at Old Navy even!
I also borrowed seats and a few other things from my SIL.

I don't mind hand me downs at all and the only reason I wouldn't use them is if they are not in good condition.

I would like to take hand me downs from J-Lo. Not her kids. Just her. Come on now, we MIGHT be the same size!

Re: Spinoff of a post on the Pregnancy Board: Hand Me Downs...
I don't have a problem with hand me down clothes or toys in good condition (no stains/tears, no broken pieces).
But DD gets almost everything new.. DD has three older cousins (all girls) and because we live OOS, we never get offered their hand me downs.
If we have another DD, she will certainly be wearing a lot of DD's hand-me-downs. I have saved everything DD's outgrown!

as long as I can wash it.. WHY NOT!!!!!!!!!
That's EXACTLY my opinion. If I can clean it myself, I'll use it.
I plan to give all of DD's clothes away at one point. Or sell them. As it stands right now, I could give away 50% of her clothes and still have more than enough left over if I had another DD. There is so much that she only used once or twice - or not at all! It would be a sin to let it all go to waste.

Re: Spinoff of a post on the Pregnancy Board: Hand Me Downs...
I have 3 large bins of hand-me-downs from my niece. I go shopping in these rather than in stores! I only bought 2 items for her so far. The rest are gifts and hand-me-downs!
I have to start bying more now because my neice was a winter baby.

Re: Spinoff of a post on the Pregnancy Board: Hand Me Downs...
I am pregnant right now and am gladly taking hand me downs. My friend gave me her infant car seats, exsersaucers, pack n play etc. My sister gave me her pack n play as well (twins) I haven't gotten many clothes because not many people i know have had boys. To me, I would rather take $$ I would have spent on clothes they will grow out of anyway and put it away for them-especially when they are small.

Re: Spinoff of a post on the Pregnancy Board: Hand Me Downs...
I'll be honest and say that I don't like to take hand me downs. I haven't needed them bc my mom sends me clothes for the boys every 2 months. She's on the merchandising/pricing team at the JCP in RF, so when she marks stuff down for Childresn's she gets first dibs. Between my mom and MIL, I rarely spent our money on clothes for them.
If people offer stuff I always say they have so much already, which they do. There have been a few people who dropped stuff off at my ILs place. I just thank them and then sent the clothes to Goodwill. I don't know why I'm like that bc there's nothing wrong with hand me downs.

Re: Spinoff of a post on the Pregnancy Board: Hand Me Downs...
My nephew is 3.5 months older than Ryan so SIL gives us some of his stuff which we're happy to take. Now, unfortunately, Ryan is the same size as him so that won't work anymore - but it was nice while it lasted. As long as it's not dingy I have no objections.

I love hand-me-downs! I rarely buy clothes for my DS b/c I have 2 nephews and I get things from my sisters - my sister sends me Burberry outfits and gorgeous clothes from france - things I would never spend the money on!

I also personally feel that some children's clothes are soooo cheap - and when you hit up the sales - AND have coupons you can really make out like a bandit not paying alot of money at all. JMO!
Yeah, but I JUST started buying Christopher's clothes. He is 16 months old, and I don't have to buy a lot. I am so lucky to have a friend with a DS who is 2 years older than Christopher and she mails me great stuff in great condition!
And Christopher's clothes are in great condition and them, and Mitchell's stuff are on my nephew now!
Yes, they are cheap, but why spend the money if you don't have to?

Re: Spinoff of a post on the Pregnancy Board: Hand Me Downs...
I have no problem accepting hand me downs...but I also LOVE buying my kids clothes and I hit GREAT sales! I am a huge fan of Denny's and during the huge sales, I am able to buy them an entire wardrobe for the necessary season. Even though I do get hand me downs (not alot) I still don't mind spending money on clothes. A kid can never have enough clothes

Re: Spinoff of a post on the Pregnancy Board: Hand Me Downs...
my cousin has a boy that is 15 months and she gave me a ton of boy newborn stuff. He was a big baby and barely got to wear most of his stuff. My aunt sent me huge packages of boy clothes. I greatly appreciated and loved all the stuff she sent.
One of my companies biggest client traveled to the company convention and didnt bring her swing with her. She didnt want to carry it on the plane. So she went out and bought a swing. She used it for 2 days and didnt know what to do with it. One of the exec's told her their was a pregnant person at corporate and the client said to give the swing to me.
Hand me downs definately dont bother me

I agree. Everytime I go into a store I always seem to find myself in the baby department and alway walking out with an outfit or two for Alex

Re: Spinoff of a post on the Pregnancy Board: Hand Me Downs...
I love hand me downs and gifts but I like to make sure that my child has at least a few things that I have gone and picked out, even if I pick out the same styles as his hand me downs. I think that makes me feel that I can provide everything if I have to. At times when I have a lot of hand me downs, I might go buy a really special outfit but if I had to buy his whole wardrobe, I would not spend so much on one thing. I guess the bonus is that whoever comes next will get the hand me downs plus my additions!

This is just my own personal opinion. Like I said, I have accepted a few hand-me-downs - but I am very specific as to what I'm accepting. I love shopping for him. I go into a store and can't resist.
I would rather pass the clothes offered to me along to someone who may not be able to buy with the change of every season. When I don't accept something that is offered to me - I will then give them two or three other people that I know NEED them.
There is nothing wrong with accepting them at all - I pass things along to people - and I am the first one to call my family members when I see a good deal at a garage sale or Once Upon a Child. I just personally haven't needed them yet.

I had the first baby among our immediate family and friends so haven't had the opportunity for hand me downs but would have no problem with them.

Re: Spinoff of a post on the Pregnancy Board: Hand Me Downs...
I took EVERYTHING from my sister, my nephew is only 14 months older than Landon. We got all of his clothes, some toys, slings, diaper bags, and my sister's glider. I did buy new furniture because I wanted it to all match. And I did want new stroller and carseat because I wanted a certain one. But we do have second hand strollers, swings, exersaucer, etc. at Grandmas

Re: Spinoff of a post on the Pregnancy Board: Hand Me Downs...
Only hand me down's I would politely decline would be car seats and cribs/PNP.
I also felt this way before DS was born.
They grow in and out of everything so fast...toys, clothes, etc. By accepting generosity of others we are in the long run saving much needed $$.

Re: Spinoff of a post on the Pregnancy Board: Hand Me Downs...
Well safety is an issue for me - and the people I know had kids who were 2-4 years old or older so I was concerned about getting equipment from them that there could have been a recall on them. But having said that nothing was offered so that never became an issue. If the item (swing, toy, bouncer etc) was newer (say 1 year old or so) and didn't have a recall I would have accepted it.
I did however very happily take an amazing box my cousin's wife sent me from TX full of clothes her daughter had only worn once or twice or still had tags on them. She had 3 showers and since their second is a boy she felt she wouldn't need any of those things anymore so she made a box for me and one for her sister in law.

I took hand me downs of a bouncy seat, play mats, soothing motions glider, swing and baby carrier. I had no problems and I'm glad I took them!
