Spinoff of Missing Boy from Brooklyn
I haven't followed the entire story but wondered why the parents or an adult was not required to sign this child out of camp. Did they mention this at all as I know I have always had to sign my kids in and out of daycare, school and camp.

They gave the school a note that he would not be taking the bus home that day, as he usually did.

Oh, ok. I didn't know they had bus service, like a school. Thanks :)

Re: Spinoff of Missing Boy from Brooklyn
Honestly I thought the same thing when I first heard that the boy was missing. He was to walk two blocks from the shcool/camp to meet his parents. He is only 9 - why was he by himself. I feel awful for thinking these things now, but you have to wonder. It is just so sad.

One of the reports I read said that he was going to meet his Mom halfway between the camp and the doctor's office that she was at. They said it was 7 blocks, but not sure if they said 7 blocks he had to walk or 7 blocks between the camp and the doctor's office. Either way, you also have to understand the area where this occurred. It's a very tight-knit Hasidic community where you see lots of kids playing out in the street. They are not always supervised directly since they are very much the type of community that keeps an eye out for each other. Sadly, no one was there in this instance.

Re: Spinoff of Missing Boy from Brooklyn
Forgive me if it is not the popular opinion but in the city, especially a tight knit neighborhood, I don't think it's a crime to let a 9 year old walk home from camp in broad daylight.
He knew his attacker. Sorry.

I didn't even let my 9 yr. old walk home from the bus stop about 50 feet from my house. 9 is too young, IMO. AND...this child had autism.

The area that this happened in is a VERY tight knit Hasidic community. Usually everyone knows everyone and their kids...as a result you will tend to see more kids without a lot of supervision because it's like everyone there is family and looks out for each other. Unfortunately this turned out tragically for this little boy and his family
I don't understand how someone could be so dammn sick and do something so horrible to a little boy.

Re: Spinoff of Missing Boy from Brooklyn
Granted, my SD is a little bit older at 12 but the other day, her camp ended 15 minutes earlier due to heat. She called me to come get her and I got there at the time camp was supposed to end. Not only did I not have to sign her out, she was the ONLY one there! There was not a single adult there to make sure she got a ride or anything. I couldn't believe it!

Are you in LI? It's different. The city, especially that community is tight. I am not disagreeing with you, it's just a different way of living there. I live in Queens and my upstairs neighbors are a very religious family. They let their youngest walk alone a lot in broad daylight.
When I was 9, I walked alone. There were predators then too.
Again, not arguing, just presenting another POV.

That being said, if I had a kid, she/he would be chained up lol I was just pointing out the mentality of why they agreed to him walking alone. It's just so sad all the way around. I hope the guy gets raped in jail.

I don't necessarily agree that he knew his attacker but I could see where you would suspect he did. Is it a possibility? Sure, but to say it for sure? I'm not sold on that.
The Hasidim community is very very tight knit, more so than I think any of us on the Island might be used to, so while he's a little young, I don't think 9 is that young where they wouldn't think anything of letting him walk a few blocks and meet him half way.
Anyway you spin it, this was a terribly tragic event. So horrific. My heart goes out to the family of this boy.

You are right, he may not have known his attacker but again, he was also Hassidic so he might have trusted him thinking he knew his family or something.

This is probably more likely. From all the reports, it seems that their meeting happened by chance.

A video surveillance camera on 18th Ave. shows the boy going with the man who is described as white and wearing black pants and a white shirt. Witnesses tell police Kletzky may have gotten into a gold car with the man. Source
I think he knew his attacker as well.

I knew this from the minute I heard the story. Its very common in this community for people to jump into other people's cars and to interact with strangers. I think the boy went to this man thinking that he could trust him but instead met a monster.

Re: Spinoff of Missing Boy from Brooklyn
I am so upset about this little boy. I just heard of this today.
I just can't imagine what he went through.
Man... I HATE people who pray on children.
As the mom of a SN child (autism!), it's even more disturbing. My child is so clueless of danger and strangers. He would follow ANYONE.
Recently, DS' bus driver took upon himself to drive DS home without a matron. DS was the only one of the bus too. I asked DH to call the bus company. We are supposed to be informed if the matron is not on the bus for whatever reason. I also lost it!!!! I am SOOO paranoid. I inspected my child private parts to look for "anything". I am serious! I am so worried for my child. Children with SN are prime target for physical, emotional and sexual abuse.
This child SHOULD have been supervised. And if he said he was meeting his mom, they should have checked and call his mom.
Regardless, he was a prey of someone who knew exactly what he was doing.
That makes me even more scared for my little boy. I want to protect him forever!!! He has no idea about "our" World. I can't even explain it to him. So it's MY job to protect him as much as I can. Yet, I am not with him 24/7. He goes to school. I am not there when he is at school. I rely on others to keep my child safe.
How terrifying to lose a child the way they lost theirs.

Re: Spinoff of Missing Boy from Brooklyn
This is so upsetting to me.
In the city, its not uncommon to let young kids walk home alone. My 11 year old neighbor used to go form the upper west side to downtown for school on the bus/subway alone everyday. There is almost a safety in crowds.
I think in smaller communities- like Borough Park- its even more common. Like someone else said, everyone knows everyone more or less and they all have the same cultural background, so there is a sense of trust and familiarity. And since there is very little crime within the community, so there is some basis for that reasoning.
I grew up in a nice area of LI. I walked myself home from school since the 2 grade. When I was in 4th grade, I'd walk me and my sister home and open the door and stay home for 30 minutes until my mom got home.
This is a tragedy. The sicko who did this to this kid was looking for a victim. He would have found one - one way or another. Its awful and devastating.
I feel so awful for those parents. I can't even imagine... I don't want to imagine. But i can tell you that the day my DD wants to walk to school on her own, I will be spying on her the whole time.
This is just so sad.
