i like these discussion and DO find them informative (honestly, many things are said here that i would never contemplate on my own, but once the idea is presented, it does kind of stick with me). Now, i'm seriously NOT trying to pass the buck pr claim that i have no part in this. BUT... i'm curious... of the people who consider themselves really "green" and come down on others for not doing their part, etc... Do you guys ever try to fight big businesses? write letters to the government about regulations and fine on big businesses and corporations?

I mean, like i said, i dont deny that we all have a part in it, but i think putting someone down b/c they drink bottled water, yet, not saying anything to lobby against a business that uses more energy than a small town (look up something like Costco's warehouse- not the store- their main warehouse that ships products throughout the country-- see how much refrigeration, etc is used) just seems like you're projecting such strong feelings onto the wrong person. Yes, everyone should chip in, but i feel that frustration and anger should really be channeled to the worst culprits of them all- big business.

I think a lot of people find it easier to start with one person....

I am so so green..lol..and I dont think anything of people that arent, only people who can and dont try. I find no reason for that. Everyone might have their own reasons, but I think there should be a reason. money, anything to keep someone from trying.

So while I might get down on someone like that, and I dont do other stuff liek what you mentioned nearly as much as I should , for me is b/c I dont have the time right now. If I was childless or my child was older, I would.

I used to belong to an email group that just sent the info to us to where to send letters etc, but now I dont have the time for it sadly.

i can totally understand the starting with one person- that's why i appreciate these threads- because it DOES open my eyes to little things that i can be doing that will help just a little..

but i guess i wonder more-so for the people who find it offensive or who get really heated about it - i feel like it's good to have those feelings because they are to make progress, but i just feel like it could be more effective if it were channeled differently Chat Icon

Re: Spinoff on being greener - who is NOT green? with poll if you want to stay anonymous!

I am not surprised by the poll. BUT in the POSITIVE side, it's not 48% who does not care. It's 48% who does not "THINK" about it.

I don't consider myself green. Yet, when I think about it. I am somehow.

I don't use chemicals on my lawn
I turn off all lights if we are not in a room
I turn down the heat when we leave the house
We don't live upstair and the heat is lower
I save gas (even in my small SUV) by combining errands and not driving in multitude of trips every day.
We recycle all cans and soda bottles

Most of those choices are "selfish" because we are saving money. Except for the lawn where I am TRUE green. I am actually trying to keep my pets "safe" and I cannot stand thinking it's going into the ground water.

Yet, I am reading ideas from others here. And I stay open minded to do better.

There is so much that can be done. I will always find someone greener than me. That does not mean I am not trying to contribute.

I personally think that unless we have "rules", everyone is not going to do it.

Some towns "force" people to recycle garbage (plastic) or you get a ticket.

And yes, everybody's action affect other people and our planet.

YET, the biggest offenders are not just us the "little" people. The car companies who refuse to change technology because it would mean mega $$$ to revamp an entire industry who works pretty good for them right now, the manufacturing (industrial, pharmaceutical, etc..) probably polute the most yet, I don't see much happening there.

I don't truly think I'm militant in this - the green in greenfreak started out about my love of the color, not about the environment.

In my journey into these issues though, this is at the point I'm at now. Moving on from the individual to larger entities. Things like choosing to buy a home that has a lot of independant locally-run businesses instead of chains. Looking for community events and clubs that I can volunteer for. Investigating and not buying from companies that are known for a host of horrible things (animal testing, poor employee practices, wastefulness). DH and I are taking a hard look at presidential candidates and where they stand on environmental issues. Although I've shot off emails to businesses like supermarkets on why their plastic bags are not recyclable, etc. I think letters may be in order now. I didn't want to initially waste the paper by sending a letter. Chat Icon

I think you're right in that it does start with the individual. I'm learning more and more little things every day, from here and elsewhere, on what I can do in my own life.

But I'm using LIF to reach out to others that will reasonably consider these changes also. I just signed up for a newsletter (thanks Colleen :D) that calls people "Light Green". Chat Icon

It's a cute term. But if even half of that 48% turned "Light Green" by doing more than just doing curbside recycling, that's a great thing! It starts the ball rolling, and the mind focused on these things longer.

I love all these threads lately but I don't want to push people away by harping on it way too much, you know? I think any issue can turn people off if it's too in their face all the time.
