Re: Spinoff question: White noise
WOW, so many great responses and so much to think about! Sorry if I started any controversy!
My feeling is, I'm not at ALL opposed to using a source of white noise in the nursery (God knows *I* would get no sleep without it...), but I don't want it to become the sort of thing where she NEEDS to have it in order to sleep. But from what I'm reading, it doesn't seem that most babies need to have that noise in order to sleep.
Again, my primary concern is whether we should keep the crib in our room when the baby comes home (where the fan runs all night to drown out DH) or if we should put her in the nursery where it's quiet. I have a lot of thinking to do.

Beth-I'll tell you for US, we put her in her crib in her room right away with a monitor to keep an eye on her. For US is was important not to have another transition (i.e. moving the crib from our room to her room or moving her from our bed to her bed, etc-though this is a whole other post and a much more controversial one than a thread on white noise )

I don't have a white noise machine in her room, however, I do have a radio w/CD player which plays her lullabies for 90 minutes as she is going to sleep. I love it...
ETA: I do have a humidifier in her room though, which, when it turns on I guess serves as white noise...
yes, we use the humidifer as a humidifer and for white noise

Re: Spinoff question: White noise
I never noticed a difference. We have an air purifier in our room and the baby slept in there at night for the first 3-4mos, in the PNP...but he would nap in his room during the day w/no noise. I never even thought about it actually!

Re: Spinoff question: White noise
We have an air purifier in her nursery since she was born. We have it in there to keep the air clean as well as to provide a buffer between our noise and her room while napping/sleeping. I know she can sleep without it because we have been places without it and she slept beautifully.

Re: Spinoff question: White noise
I have a white noise machine in all of my kids rooms and have had it there from day 1. Yes they "need" it to sleep and wake up without it, but it drowns out EVERYTHING so they are not woken up by sudden sounds.
