Spinoff to C section question/recovery...Lots of QUESTIONS!!!!
I have my c section on Friday am. After reading up on spinals, and that post i am so nervous about puking. I hate to puke!
I did fine on the epi, I only got the shakes, but pain meds like percosets etc make me so nauseaus so I never take them.
Is the spinal like taking those narcotics?
Should I expect to get sick? Did anyone not get sick?
Did anyone get an epi for a scheduled c section?
I have to say this is the only thing i am nervous about!
TIA!!!

Re: Spinoff to C section question/recovery...Lots of QUESTIONS!!!!
I had absolutely no problem with the spinal. It was nothing actually. The only reaction I had was in recovery, my hands and face were a bit itchy. That was it!

Re: Spinoff to C section question/recovery...Lots of QUESTIONS!!!!
I had an epidural and that made me slightly nauseated for a little while, but nothing like general anasthesia does. Also they kept the epi in to administer local pain meds until the day after the c/s, and this was great = no side effects.
I would suggest saying NO to the Percoset and just taking the Rx Midol and Tylenol to fight the pain -- the pain was never that bad for me anyway. There is also Darvoset which is not as strong as Percoset, but I didn't want anything like that. Be sure to EAT when you take pain killers, and take a stool softener!! When I got home, it was he77 trying to BF while I was constipated -- and then trying to get OUT of the bathroom when DD was crying for me..
Things I wish I had known ....

Re: Spinoff to C section question/recovery...Lots of QUESTIONS!!!!
I absolutely HATE to throw up I too was so nervous about getting sick. I had a spinal and was totally fine during the procedure, once in recovery I did get suddenly very naucious and threw up bile (no food in me) about 3 times in a span of 8 minutes or so. Then the nurse gave me some strong anti-nausea meds in my iv and I was good to go, I never got sick of felt sick again! Maybe you can request that they put the anti-nausea meds in your IV from the start. I know I had some in there from the start but they gave me a stronger one once I did get sick. good luck!!!

Re: Spinoff to C section question/recovery...Lots of QUESTIONS!!!!
I had a spinal - it was amazing!!! At one point I thought I would get sick (but I think that is bc everyone told me I would) --- I told the anestiologist that I was thinking I may get sick but was trying not to - he put a bowl next to my head, I had him take it away bc I really just started to not think about it. Mind over matter is big with me and once I got it out of my head I was fine.

Re: Spinoff to C section question/recovery...Lots of QUESTIONS!!!!
I too HATE to puke and will do ANYTHING and EVERYTHING NOT to!!
I had a scheduled c/s, had a spinal, I barely felt it, honestly just a little pinch. Not sure what exactly is in it though. I DID get sick, but not until after we got our room (about 4 hrs after c/s). I was HOT and felt nauseous while in recovery.
Hope things go well for you!!!!

Re: Spinoff to C section question/recovery...Lots of QUESTIONS!!!!
Ok, If I didnt puke or get nauseous there is HOPE... you know how sick I was up till the day of delivery. i was fine during the section. Felt 100% ok.
I felt nauseous the next day but it passed and I had no throwing up at all.
i took the percosets as my pain got bad, but if your not going to....my advice is take those Motrin 600's every 5-6 hrs( depends when they will give them to you) like clockwork, pain or not. They squelch the pain and when I forgot to take them, it would take 2-3 doses to make me back to less pain again.
Its gonna be fine. I think your gonna be fine!!!!!

Re: Spinoff to C section question/recovery...Lots of QUESTIONS!!!!
Throwing up to me was one of the worst parts of labor. Even in pain and expecting my new baby any minute, I did everything I could not to throw up. I threw up twice in the labor room right before pushing (from the epi) and twice while they were stitching me up from the c. Both times were from the epi. Hopefully then you wont get sick since you didnt get sick from the epi the last time. I was given percoset afterwards (which did NOTHING to me or for me) and I never threw up. Hopefully it will be the same for you! Good luck!!!

Re: Spinoff to C section question/recovery...Lots of QUESTIONS!!!!
THank you so much! I hate to puke, I am totally a non puker, I def believe in mind over matter, i've stopped myself many times.
I just can't believe this is stressing me today and on top of that I've been having contractions every 20 mins all day so far.
I didn't puke when I got general an. for my tonsils (when i was24!), I had 1 point where I felt very nauseas, they gave me meds and I was fine after that, I never puked, not even that whole day and if i coudln't eat any solids for like a week!
I hope there's hope for me~
Kara-I knew you meant Motrin

I had a scheduled c and a spinal. The shot hurt and I did get the shakes but the anesthesiologist was great and every time I started feeling nauseous, he gave me a shot of something in my arm to counter act it. After DS was out, I did dry heave but I really think it was more nerves and emotions than anything else. Talk to your anesthesiologist before you go into the OR and let him/her know your fears about getting sick. If they know you are prone to it, they should be able to help you counteract it like they did with me. You'll do fine!!!
ETA: I was able to eat small bites of food that evening (jello, plain bread). I wasn't able to really eat normally until about 4 days later.

Re: Spinoff to C section question/recovery...Lots of QUESTIONS!!!!
I honestly puked for hours (5 hours to be exact!!!). But I have little tolerance for any drugs of any kind. I also could not take Percocet due to severe side effects on me. So I was on Motrin. That did slow down my recovery.
The actual spinal was fine.
I would not worry about it. My SIL was very sick after her 1st c-section. She did not get sick for her 2nd c-section.
