Spinoff to cows milk - did anyone not give their babies cow milk?
Because of allergies or other reasons?
If so - what did you use? How did it go?

we use Silk Soymilk because of dd's milk allergy. She's fine with it.

My DD is almost 20 months - she still drinks formula... she is allergic to milk, rice, and has an intolerance to Soy milk.

I'm just curious because I'm vegan, and while not planning on having Cailen be completely vegan, dont want to give him too much dairy if not necessary - is there enough fat in Silk soymilk for brain development? What did ped say about the whole dairy thing in terms of calcium and development of all that important stuff?

Silk makes a Soy milk for kids - it has extra vitamins and stuff in it. I'm not sure about the fat content. I do know that one of the nurses at my allergist office has never given her kids dairy products - she always gave them vitamins and later on calcium supplements.

a while back there was an article in the NYtimes regarding vegan/vegetarianism for children. While I'm not sure how accurate the article was, they author (who I believe is a medical dr) said that not all vitamins from the same source are equal in terms of absorption into the body... it might be worth a search as I recall it being very interesting and provocative

Ava gets no cow's milk, all soy milk. My dr. said cows milk is overrated, anyway. Many countries don't even have cows for milk She's fine and healthy and takes a vitamin and eats well, so I don't think I'll even give her milk if her allergy goes away.

That was an awful article - it referenced a story about an infant who was starved to death by his vegan parents because they fed him raw juices when he was a newborn... I'm sorry - that was not because his parents were vegan. It was because his parents were negligent and stupid.
I want to be careful with Cailen - he is going to be vegetarian, not vegan. I want to make sure he is getting everything he needs though. My take on it is this - he will definitely be eating healthier than the typical child who eats at McDonalds and snacks on cheetos and God knows what when he or she comes home! The parents of those kids usually are the ones that ask me the most questions of where he will be getting his protein from. I'm always like - uh - and how much protein compared to fat and chicken beak were in those nuggets and french fries your overweigh child just ate?

Re: Spinoff to cows milk - did anyone not give their babies cow milk?
I did worry that EMily had enough "good" fat as a baby after 1 yr, so we kept her on a bit of Isomil until she was 18 mths old - I mixed half and half for a while to make sure she was getting enough of all her nutrients and fat. Then, once her table food diet improved, we stopped the formula all together and I made sure to give her foods with good fat in them - avocado, etc.

Thats a good idea....
Cailen drinks dairy formula now, and I might continue him with dairy because i want it to be his choice to be vegan if he wants (and when he is old enough to decide not to be vegetarian - thats ok too) - I dont want him to become lactose intolerant if he wants ice cream or pizza at a bday party....
