Spinoff to Daycare Vent - Sending a sick child
What's your threshold for sending your child to daycare when they're sick?
I have an almost 4mo DD and she has her first cold. She doesn't have a fever, but she hasn't been eating well, she has a cough, is congested and is sneezing a lot. We took her to the dr and he said there was not much we could do. We've sent her to daycare because neither of us have any vacation time left and we can't realistically take off every time she has a cold. I know that I wouldn't want other parents to send their kids in like that, but I don't think I really had a choice in the matter.
I don't want to start a flame war here, but I'm really interested in hearing how you deal with sickness and vacation time.

Re: Spinoff to Daycare Vent - Sending a sick child
I will send my DC to daycare if they have runny noses.
If I kept them home for every runny nose without a fever, I might as well not send them to daycare at all.
Chances are they picked up the runny nose from someone else at daycare, so I have no guilt in doing that.
If they have a fever, I will not send them. And with a cough, I usually will send them as well.
ETA: When DS first started daycare at 12 months, I swear he had a snotty nose for the next 9 months. I'm not even kidding! There's no way I could have stayed home with him.

Re: Spinoff to Daycare Vent - Sending a sick child
DS has only been sick once and it was similar to what your daughter had and I didn't send him in. They would take him as long as he didn't have a fever, but for his sake I wanted him home and to take care of him. If he had a small cold but was acting normal I would probably send him in. However if he were not eating, cranky etc I would definitely keep him home.
That being said I have a very flexible schedule and DS has lots of sick time so it isn't an issue for us.

Re: Spinoff to Daycare Vent - Sending a sick child
i have to agree. DS runs high fevers, so I basically have no days left because I take off for those days. DH is a consultant so doesn't have the luxury to take off like i do. i send DS to daycare as long as he does not have a fever. if i can get my mom to stay home with him i will.
i wish i could stay home all the time and i do feel bad about exposing him to other children. but hes in daycare because i HAVE to work in order to make some type of money to take care of him. if i take off without pay, it goes on my record AND my paycheck will be lower which will make it very hard to pay our bills. i just cant afford that.

A cold.. I think the first few days of the cold are the worst.. so I may keep DS home if he is just miserable. KWIM? For His sake though. If he was acting normal with congestion..then he's going!! Colds... they all will get...
Fever and stomach virus...he is kept home!!!
ETA: DH and I both take off. Lots of times we both take a HALF day.. so It's never a full day offf. KWIM We split the day

Clear runny nose and acting fine then he goes in fevers or just not himself then he stays home.

I agree except for the cough. DS had a runny nose and a bad cough with no fever and I kept him home. If it was the tail end, and just a dry, post-nasal drip cough, then I'd send him. So it depends. But yeah, if it's just a "mild" runny nose, he goes.

Ditto.
A cold can take a turn for the worse & wind up with RSV, broncholitis, pneumonia so pay careful attention to his breathing during the night. If you hear a wheezing sound, a seal bark, wrap him in the blanket & bring him outside in the cool night air. That will ease his breathing until you head straight for your ped, PM Pediatrics (open until midnight) or an ER.
Also if you have a cold mist humidifier, that will ease the congestion.
As for taking off, prepare for a back-up in case you cannot take off. Sending a sick kid to daycare isn't an option. It's not good for your sick child to be around all of the germs, it's not good for the other children to be around a sick kid & if it's something you do often, you will likely be asked to leave the daycare.

He only doesn't go if it's a fever or stomach virus.
I hate sending him with a cold but, like PP said, most likely, he picked it up there.
I also think he does better there than at home when he's got a cold - there's more distraction to make him happier.

Agreed. If I didn't send him with a cold, he'd never go. THey're all like that. It has gotten better as the years have gone on and the colds have gotten to be less. Everyone goes with a cold and/or cough.
A fever and he stays home. He used to get chronic ear infectrions with a fever and we would send him with that (otherwise I'd be out of a job), but only if he wasn't super cranky--if he was going to be too much of a disruption in the room needing to be held or not sleeping, then we'd keep him home.
It's unfortunate for the kids, but realistically, most people jsut don't have the kind of leeway with their jobs to always be home everytime there's a sniffle. Only once in three years did DS ever seem to get worse at school and they called us recommending we come get him.

Re: Spinoff to Daycare Vent - Sending a sick child
My son gets sick in daycare often. If he has a clear runny nose and no fever, he goes to daycare.
90% of my vacation days are used for his sick days/dr. visists where he stays home. Lots of my coworkers constantly ask why I never take a week off here and there like everyone else. Why don't we go away for a few days? I would love to, but I can't. I need to save those days for when he gets sick.
I assume he will grow out of this, and I hope this winter is better than last, but I just won't chance it.

Re: Spinoff to Daycare Vent - Sending a sick child
I will send my DDs if they just have a cold. The cutoff for me is a fever, or they seem particularly off. The pediatrician ALWAYS told me to guage how well they are by their temperment...

Re: Spinoff to Daycare Vent - Sending a sick child
DS has had a cold and we sent him- he just had a runny/stuffed up nose and little cough.
I think I'll only keep him home if he has a fever or seems very sick- like cathargic and seems to need a dr. visit. Otherwise, a cold is a cold and nothing is going to cure it but time.

Re: Spinoff to Daycare Vent - Sending a sick child
The kids always have a cold and a cough. It's constant. In fact, so do I. My husband doesn't-ironically .
For a cough or cold they go.
If there is a fever, if they are not eating as they normally do, if their temperament is off, etc we keep them home. DH is out of town for business and when he is out of town during an illness, I stay home. If he is in town and not training, he stays home.
If a cough takes a while to go away or gets worse, we make an appt with the ped. DS has had a cough for 1.5 months now. 1.5 MONTHS!!! We've taken him to the ped about 3 times for it so far and it is just a cough, nothing can me done. He was on antibiotics during that time too, for an ear infection (stayed home for the ear infection, nat) so if it was more than a cough, it would have nipped it. But, because it was just a cough, antibiotics did nothing for it and he is now at the tail end of the cough.
So-for kennel cough (as I like to call it, flame me), we all go about our business as usual; same for a run of the mill cold.

Re: Spinoff to Daycare Vent - Sending a sick child
I follow our daycare guidelines. We were given a sheet telling us when to keep a kid home. If I have a question about it I pick up the phone and call the director and describe exactly what is going on and ask if DD can come in, or if I should keep her home.
As a rule though, I err on the side of caution and often keep DD out for an extra day to make sure she doesn't succumb to something else as soon as she gets back.

Us too. If I had to stay home every time one of them had a runny nose, I may as well quit.

Re: Spinoff to Daycare Vent - Sending a sick child
Probably get flamed for this...
I would have done the same.
AJ goes in sick a lot. But I judge it with two things.. Fever and Mom instinct.
If she has no fever I'd send her in only if I 'feel' its right. Sometimes you just 'know'. Since she has allergies and used to get ear infections all the time, I can honestly say there was/is NO WAY I could stay home each time she was sick.
If she's lethargic and grumpy, fever or not, I stay home. Sometimes we all just need a recoup day, ya know?
If she's not eating great but eating ok, and she's not too fussy but not 100% and on the rebound, then I'll send her in.
Now if she's got snot running into her mouth and dried all over her face from trying to wipe herself since its coming on so fast NO ONE can keep up, her eyes are red, her cough is wet and she looks shaky.. NO GO... I really wish parents WOULD stay home with their kids! (I saw this once and even *I* was like w.t.h. and told the director I wanted that kids quaranteed) Ugh

We dealt with this last year and I asked for a referral to an allergist. He was tested and has seasonal allergies. He was coughing pretty much from October to the end of December.
To answer the original question, I also follow daycare guidelines. Colds, he goes. I couldn't possibly stay home for every cold and sniffle or I wouldn't have a job.
