Re: Spinoff to Did you breastfeed... anyone get..."You're STILL BREASTFEEDING???"

story of my life. I started walking with one of the drs at the ped practice, she is supportive and nice to meChat Icon

The worst is ahead of me...I am going to NY for Easter. My mom and sisters are supportive, but my extended family was grossed out by the thought of it when he was 3 months old.

Its going to be some show when he gets tired and demands it in front of everyone.

Good for you for going 10monthsChat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I have no idea why people even think it's any of their business to comment on how YOU decide to feed your child whether it be formula or breastmilk.

With that said, my dad was breastfed til he was THREE! yes 3 years oldChat Icon My grandmother only stopped him cause she had a newborn to feed. (he's an off the boat sicilian)

So true. It's amazing to me because the AAP recommendation is to breastfeed for at least 1 year and then as long as is mutually desirable and the WHO recommendation is at least 2 years.

I always wonder what people expect extended bfers to look like or act like.

People are always caught off guard with me...like I am not mother earthy enough or not nurturing enough when they hear I still BF.

Re: Spinoff to Did you breastfeed... anyone get..."You're STILL BREASTFEEDING???"

Commenting on Janice's post - my own sister said to me last week - "I definitely didnt put you down for the long term BF type"...she didnt expand on it and I got caught up in something else so didnt ask for an explanation of what an extended BF mom looks like.....

To answer the OP's q. My DD is 25mths and still BF. I find that other moms who BF are the best supporters, the ones who didnt or who did but for only a few weeks are the ones that are most shocked.

Maybe because its such a big committment and a purely selfless act on the mom's behalf that other people cannot understand you doing it for so long or sometimes it could be resentmet that they didnt for whatever reason.

Whatever it is dont let them bother you. You are doing a fantastic job and should be proud of yourself.Chat Icon

It's funny. I never though of myself as the extended breastfeeding type until I read about the benefits of it. Now I can't imagine not nursing my 16 month old.

Re: Spinoff to Did you breastfeed... anyone get..."You're STILL BREASTFEEDING???"

DD is almost 9 months and I just recently got that comment. Especially now that I'm pg again- I KNOW I'll be hearing it more often Thankfully my OB-GYN is a staunch supporter of her BFing mommies and is actually encourageing me to continue through my pregnancy.

I love BFing and I'm so thankful we've been so successful at it.

Re: Spinoff to Did you breastfeed... anyone get..."You're STILL BREASTFEEDING???"

We've also been at it for 10 months. I've been very lucky so far in that regard- no one has said anything to me yet. Both sides of the family have been very supportive. My mom BFed both me and my sister until we were about 2 yrs old. And on DH's side, both SILs BFed (although I'm not sure how long they did it.)

I plan to continue BFing beyond a year. I'm sure I'll get comments after that...

I have gotten comments a while back from a few dr's telling me that I would never be BF after 3 months, then not after 6 months - and now shock when I indicate that I am still BF at 8 months.

Re: Spinoff to Did you breastfeed... anyone get..."You're STILL BREASTFEEDING???"

My in-laws thought it was 'creepy' that I breastfed at all. And one time I fed my oldest at a hair salon (I was with a friend for her wedding trial). I was fully covered - but the babies head was under my feeding drape. The receptionist came over and admonished me that I was 'disgusting' and should not be doing 'that sort of thing' in a family salon. She said I should go into the mall if I wanted to do "that".

And yeah - they both breastfed for a little over a year and I got the comments "Geez! What are you going to breastfeed him when he's 15?" Uh.. yeah, that was my plan.Chat Icon

Damned indeed.

Congrats on your 10 months! Chat Icon

I get this reaction ALL the time and DD is only 5 months. When they ask how long I am going to do it for, they are so surprised. It's frustrating. Chat Icon

Re: Spinoff to Did you breastfeed... anyone get..."You're STILL BREASTFEEDING???"

My DD was breastfed until she was about 25 months old. She finally just weaned herself. I got that comment allllllllllllll the time. I just politely explained that it's recommended until at least 2 years of age & that I planned to do at least that. I really didn't care what anyone said because I knew I was doing the right thing for my child, and I really want people to know that breastfeeding (even for "that long") is natural & normal & nothing about it makes me uncomfortable.

I had a professor in school tell me that breastfeeding past one year would be a "Freudian nightmare" because my daughter would start sexualizing my boobs. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Oh boy the debate that started...

I haven't gotten that reaction yet. DS is also 10 mths and he is still BFing. Most of the moms I know that BF did it until their child was a year, unless they weaned themselves earlier.

Re: Spinoff to Did you breastfeed... anyone get..."You're STILL BREASTFEEDING???"

You know what? Most people I know BF until the baby is one, which is what my pediatrician reccomends. I don't think 10 months is too old to be bfing at allChat Icon

Now, if you DC was 18 or 19 months, that would be another story. Just my opinion, but when the kid can crawl on your lap, and lift your shirt, its time to stop.

What exactly is wrong with that? The WHO recommends breastfeeding until at least 2 years old.

Please do some more research on the benefits of extended breastfeeding. I think you'll find there's a lot you don't know.
