Spinoff to do you eat rabbit - What's the difference...
... between eating rabbit and other animals? How do you decide which animals are food and which are not?

I don't like the taste of other animals. I like beef, pork and chicken. I don't even like turkey.

Yes.
A cow is the same as a dog or a rabbit or a cat or whatever. I don't eat any land animals. I feel like mammals especially re too close to humans and our beloved pets. I just couldn't imagine eating it.
It all depends on what you're coditioned to eating. If we were used to eating rabbits it would not be a big deal. We're told it's ok to eat cows, even though cows are also cute and furry

Re: Spinoff to do you eat rabbit - What's the difference...
It's entirely a mental thing - we don't raise animals for the purposes of eating them; we buy the meat from a supermarket and are completely detached from the entire process of raising and killing the animal.
Also, since we don't keep cows or chickens as pets, we tend to have an easier time with eating them.
Another reason - not everything tastes like chicken.

To me, no, they are not the same. Yes, they are meat, but the consistency is TOTALLY different.
I've tried buffalo- too tough venison- to gamey duck- too greasy I once (unknowingly) ate DOG in Thailand and thought it was gross even before I found out what it was.

I generally do not like meat (although THAT has changed since becoming PG....). I think that the human body from a young age is conditioned in the US to rely on livestock....like we drink cow's milk.....to me this makes no sense. There are other ways to get calcium & they are not from animals that weigh 1500 - 1700 lbs+.
Also certain meats are treated badly, even for "livestock" standards. Like how they make veal... it sickens me.
Also there are things like hormones & GMO in the food they give to animals used for food....there is a lot to consider....I could go on for hours

Re: Spinoff to do you eat rabbit - What's the difference...
For me it's a detachment issue. I have never had a cow or chicken or pig for a pet, but I have had a rabbit. Also, I look at rabbits as cute fury little things, where the other animals are not that cute!

Re: Spinoff to do you eat rabbit - What's the difference...
I treat all non-pets as potential food. Since I don't have a rabbit as a pet, they are fair game. I've had cats, dogs, gerbils, guinea pigs and rats as pets, so they are all off-limits. When I travel, I usually look for the "unusual" meats. Buffalo, alligator, etc.

great commentary by denis leary is appropriate for this thread
Red meat, white meat, blue meat, meat-o-f'ing-rama. You will eat it. Because not eating meat is a decision. Eating meat is an instinct! Yeah! And I know what it's about. "I don't want to eat the meat because I love the animals. I love the animals." Hey, I love the animals too. I love my doggy. He's so cute. My fluffy little dog.. He's so cute- There's the problem. We only want to save the cute animals, don't we? Yeah. Why don't we just have animal auditions. Line 'em up one by one and interview them individually. "What are you?" "I'm an otter." "And what do you do?" "I swim around on my back and do cute little human things with my hands." "You're free to go." "And what are you?" "I'm a cow." "Get in the f'ing truck, ok pal!" "But I'm an animal." "You're a baseball glove! Get on that truck!" "I'm an animal, I have rights!" We kill the cows to make jackets out of them and then we kill each other for the jackets we made out of the cows.
You will eat the meat folks, because this country was founded on two things. Meat, and war. You eat enough f'ing meat, you wanna kill somebody. That's the way it works. That was the ultimate American dream. During that Persian Gulf War, I was sitting in my living room, naked, with a can of Budweiser and a three inch steak watching the war, live, on TV. I had a six foot erection with a giant cheese burger on the end of it. I ate so much meat during the war that by the time the war was over three weeks later, I was like, "No no no. We need to keep fighting. Make a couple of stops on our way home from the Persian Gulf. First stop! Vietnam! Surprise the f'k out of those people, huh?" "You make a movie?" "Not this time, pal!"

Yep, for me it's a cute and ugly thing. I can't eat cute little furry things. I don't wear fur because the animals are too cute. I know, I know that's not PC, but that's the way it is for me.

Re: Spinoff to do you eat rabbit - What's the difference...
I don't "love" any meat- If I had to give it up tomorrow, I could... however, I also like to try new things, I have eaten many kinds of animals- even some "cute" ones, other ones are simply off limits to me... it is a personal choice and completely mental- no real logic behind it- it's just what I choose to want to try and what I choose to never try

Re: Spinoff to do you eat rabbit - What's the difference...
Mental: I won't eat domestic animals. No cats or dogs.
The rest of it is taste preference and culture. I grew up here and am not used to eating things like snake, rabbit, quail, etc. Most of those things taste gamey to me, and I don't like it.

Re: Spinoff to do you eat rabbit - What's the difference...
Definitley a mental thing for me too. I go through spurts where I will completely skeeve some meats, not others and I don't know why. Since I was little I skeeved lamb and veal and will never eat them again. I have gone through spurts where I haven't eaten hamburgers/chopped meat for years. I typically eat poultry, a little fish, some beef & some pork but that's all. I definitley detach myself from the thought that they are actually animals. I can't even eat lobster, crab, etc. because it is served as a whole animal. I have lots of eating issues

Re: Spinoff to do you eat rabbit - What's the difference...
I've given up meat in the past but eat some of it now.
I don't think I could ever eat rabbit, because I had several as pets when I was young.
If it was a matter of starving to death, I am sure I could talk myself into eating most things, but if it is a choice, I don't see a lot of things on my plate.

Exactly. I wont eat shark (mako) either because I feel weird eating an animal that is up there at the top of the food chain.

Re: Spinoff to do you eat rabbit - What's the difference...
It's a pet thing. Anything that I or any of my friends had as pets are off-limits. I think it's innate.
My son told me about Nicaragua (the school is raising money for a community down there).
Joseph:"There is nothing to eat there - only lizards."
Me: "What about plants? Can't they eat plants."
Joseph: "No - only lizards. But they keep them as pets too."
Me: "How long do they keep them as pets?"
Joseph: "I don't know."
Me "Maybe they keep them as pets until they get hungry?"
After a full minute of silence, he said "No. They can't eat their pets. They have to go catch another lizard to eat."
I asked, "What if they want dessert?"
He replied, "They still have to catch another lizard."
Bottom line: Don't name your food.
