We were watching Charlotte's Web last night on DVD, and even though I loooooovvvvveeee pig products, I was a little skeeved by the fact that they were cooking up and serving bacon while the girl was bottle feeding Wilbur at the table....

Re: Spinoff to do you eat rabbit - What's the difference...
I had rabbits as pets growing up - so I just couldn't eat something I had as a pet!! just like dog and cats - but yet I eat fish - so go figure!!!

For me it's a detachment issue. I have never had a cow or chicken or pig for a pet, but I have had a rabbit. Also, I look at rabbits as cute fury little things, where the other animals are not that cute!
I agree with the pet thing. If it can be owned as a pet, it will not be eaten by this chick.
Also, I think it is what I grew up eating. I have to be honest that in terms of meat, I have not ventured past things that I did not grow up eating on a regular basis.

To me it is just taste. I dont like red meat or pork. I love any kind of poultry though; duck, squab, quail you name it. Rabbit to me tastes like chicken. Down here, people have tried kangaroo, emu and crocodile. I will not try the first two, b/c they look like a dark meat, but I am a bit curious about crocodile as it is a white meat.

this is one of the major reasons why I am a vegetarian.
word!
to comment on NthShrGrl & Golden Rod.... your posts reminds me of my friend Sam. She grew up in australia on a pig farm..... She would take care of the piglets and name them and her dad would be like "No, her name is 'Christmas Dinner'" That totally effed with her as a child. Needless to say she is a vegetarian

Re: Spinoff to do you eat rabbit - What's the difference...
This is EXACTLY why I don't eat meat. We put nice little labels on things to delineate what's ok to eat and what's not. Cats, dogs, bunnies - they are pets, so off limits. Cows, pigs - they are farm animals, not pets, so they are edible.
BUT, other than those nice little labels we place on them to delineate what's ok and ethical to eat, and what's not, there is simply NO difference.
A pig has the same exact emotions as your cat or dog. Just like your cat or dog, a pig squeals or cries when it gets hurt, and gets scared when attacked. You would never fathom killing your doggy to eat it because many would find that inhumane and unethical - if a pig has the same intellect, and same emotions, why is it ok then to eat the pig?
Sorry for the tangent

... between eating rabbit and other animals? How do you decide which animals are food and which are not?
SOOO agree. I don't eat animals, but I have to say that certain ones do pain me more to see others eat them (like duck and pork). I have raised ducks in the past and pigs are such highly intelligent animals (as smart as dogs) that it is really hard for me to think of them when people are eating pork.
