Spinoff to elite nursery schools - since some moms said they went to Stonybrook

I just wanted to mention that my sister is a school counselor and she told me that SUNY Stonybrook got over 60,000 applications this year - for approximately 4,000 spots.

It's always been a very good school - and with this economy it will be harder to get in than most private schools. Go SUNY! Chat Icon

that's pretty funny.... nothing like a bad economy to drum-up competition Chat Icon

when I came here as an undergrad (1990 Chat Icon ) I think the mean SAT was something like 1050, with a 550/450 math/verbal split.... it has steadily increased since then.... I think we're up to almost 1200 now!

Go figure... I went here bluntly becuase it's a very good science school, and I didn't want to kill my mom with tuition expenses, or myself with debt. it has worked out great for me... best decision I made.... proved to me that $$ does NOT mean a better education...

I hope my snooty HS teachers find that out eventually!

Many of the state schools and community colleges are receiving applications from the best and brightest students this year. This is due to the economy. Nassau and Suffolk Community Colleges are being more selective in who they admit this year due to the increase in the number of applicants.

I agree... it isn't normally difficult to get into SBU at all..... getting good grades in difficult programs (like undergrad pharmacology) is a diff story....

A good portion of the less diligent students are 'weeded-out' before their jr year....

It's actually rated one of the top 10 Public Universities in Computer Science, Science and a few other Categories and the Health Science Center is also ranked high (where I attended)

They are an EXCELLENT teaching hospital!!! I got to use equipment very few hospitals have!!!

The State Universities (as opposed to the colleges) have always been harder to get into.

Re: Spinoff to elite nursery schools - since some moms said they went to Stonybrook

I was an Orientation Leader and an Academic Advisor when I went to Stony Brook. Yep, another SB alum here. We told the incoming freshman, "look to your left, look to your right, chances are that one of the 2 people sitting next to you will not be here for graduation." In most cases, it was true.

Someone here on LIF mentioned SAT scores. Stony Brook was known not to consider them as heavily as grades at that time but it was not easy to get in.

I want to give a big shout out to the often forgotten English department. I majored in English. It was sometimes not easy to major in English at a school that was so focused on the sciences. The English department is sort of a hidden gem there. The professors are top notch. Many of my professors were well published in their areas of study and some had Pulitzer prizes. (In addition, one of them was totally HOT Chat Icon .)

I read that this year's senior class in the entire US is the largest in history - therefore competition is FIERCE.
