Re: Spinoff to feeling old: what items did you not have growing up, that kids today have
Cordless phones. I remember the looong cord on our old kitchen phone. Then our first cordless had this long attenae you could poke people with
Ipods- to think all of my hs mix tapes are obsolete. I remember loving my disney records when I was little.
Digital Cameras! GPS!
We didn't even get an answering machine until I was in the 6th grade!

OMG, how WEIRD, I was JUST thinking of this very thing this morning!! In addition to the things you mentioned = We only had 13 channels 2 -13 plus U We didn't have a push button phone, and when there first were pushbuttons, you could still hear the 'rotary' dialing of the phone company No vcr/beta No computers/computer games No CDs No microwaves
ETA - We typed on a typewriter without automatic correction That was effing hard...
I'm sure there are TONS of things I am forgetting

I also see that the availability of some foods has changed a lot. I had hamburgers my whole life but I don't know if there was any sushi available on Long Island when I was a kid. There were no Indian restaurants and I don't remember any Thai either.

Re: Spinoff to feeling old: what items did you not have growing up, that kids today have
I went off to college and took a typewriter with me By the time I graduated, the internet was just getting started....
I still have old records (LP's) I had as a child. I also still have my yellow Sony walkman and a ton of cassette tapes. My first car was a 1995 and it had a tape deck.

let's see if i can add to the list...
*we didn't have cable tv in the mid 80s we had ONtv... not sure if it was out here on the east coast, but it was before "regular" cable. it was only one channel, mostly a movie channel.
*we didn't even have a tape deck in the car
*we didn't have power steering or windows
*we didn't have fm radio in the car
*we didn't have digital anything!

Re: Spinoff to feeling old: what items did you not have growing up, that kids today have
We made popcorn on the stove with Jiffy Pop until we got a popcorn maker
Never had my nails done or eyebrows done as a kid. My dd has both done and she is 12.
Remember carbon paper? I worked in an office and had to use it.
Ditto machine in school. We would smell them after they were run off.
No glue sticks, just paste, that we ate!
Never mind digital cameras, we didn't even get a camera with a flash built in until i was in middle school. Remember those flash cubes.
