Spinoff to fence etiquette
Our back neighbor has a pool at the very back of their property and it's our chain-link fence that separates us.
We want to replace the fence since DD has discovered she can climb up it and I'm really worried about the lure of the pool.
Would it be rude of us to ask that they go half on a new privacy fence?
FWIW, we are getting the trees along our back fence cut down this week so they will no longer be making a mess in his pool. We aren't asking any money for that even though they offered to pay half last year and gave us a quote from their guy. Our guy was much less for more trees so we are going with him.

Re: Spinoff to fence etiquette
you can ask but if it was me I would just install my fence up against theirs. It might be easy to split cost of the fence but it might get touchy later on when their are repairs.
I just personally wouldnt want to get into those relationships with my neighbors.....it can go sour quickly.

It's our fence, not theirs. If we take it down, there would be no fence at all between us. They don't have one around their pool either.
That's a good point about the repairs, etc.

Re: Spinoff to fence etiquette
I thought if they had a pool, THEY were required to have a fence.
If you take your fence down, they should have to put one up immediately. That being the case, they should at least pay for half, or else they can get stuck paying for the whole thing on their own.

Not all at.. I think they should pay for half, especially since they have a pool.

Re: Spinoff to fence etiquette
NYS requires a fence of at least 4 foot when you have a pool.
I would have no problems asking them to split the cost of a fence. We split the cost of a fence with a neighbor. Never had any issues with them or the fence repairs, maintenance, etc.

I wouldn't ask someone and I would be put out if someone asked me.
I'd feel compelled to say yes b/c I was put on the spot.
They probably offered to pay half on the trees because they wanted them down.....

Re: Spinoff to fence etiquette
We asked our neighbor if they wanted to split our fence. She said she couldn't and we did it ourselves.
I don't think it's rude AT ALL. How is that rude??
