Spinoff to First Words- when did they say it?

How old was your LO when they said their first word?
I always wondered about this!

Re: Spinoff to First Words- when did they say it?

DS was about 6 months old when he started to say "Mom". I though it was just a fluke, but a lot of people heard him say it including my doctor. He said it for 3 months and then stopped. I don't what you consider a word, but DS started to say ba-ba just before 9 months. Now at 13 months, he can say Mama, Uh-oh, Dada, ba-ba, bye, and baby...Once in a while he will come out with a word and only say it one time..

When he said "Mom" he was looking at me...

Re: Spinoff to First Words- when did they say it?

DD turned 8 months last week and that's basically around the time she started. Between the week before she turned 8 months and this week..she says a total of 3 words.

Re: Spinoff to First Words- when did they say it?

it depends. I wait to "call it" until he says it in context, not just saying the word. like he has just started saying "mama" in earnest, but he doesn't look at me or call me, he's just saying it...so I don't count it. Chat Icon

according to my post, he said his first word in context around 10 months.

Re: Spinoff to First Words- when did they say it?

Some kids take longer than others. At his 1 year appt, the doctors said DS was a bit behind because all he said was ba (which he didn't start to say until maybe 10 months). Everything was ba this and ba that.

Then the next day, he started saying mama. About 2 weeks later, he added dada.

This week he has been saying ney ney, ne ga ga. Not really sure what that means. He talks non-stop though all of a sudden.

I should add that he only says ma ma when he wants something of course. Chat Icon

Re: Spinoff to First Words- when did they say it?

I don't really count mama and dada as words but, if so, I think most kids say them pretty early on. Both of mine were saying mama and dada for me and DH by 8mos. DD is now 10 mos and she will repeat a lot of words but, in context says - hi, bye, mama, dada, uh oh (very infrequently), ba ba, and nuh nuh (for nose). I can't remember when DS started with more words than mama and dada - would have to look it up.

DS is 6 months and started saying "da da da da" and "blah blah", but I don't count them as words. To me he's just babbling.

yeah, it usually comes around a year (the first true word...I'm a SLP). they have to use the word consistently to refer to a particular object (like always saying "baba" when they want a bottle). Canonical babbling begins around 7-10 months and can be reduplicated or variegated. That preceeds jargon.

Dada started at 6.5 months... Maaa started at 7.5 months when he wanted out of his crib... Dada looking at daddy and MaMa looking at me started at about 9 months... then baba and uh oh at 10 months.

Re: Spinoff to First Words- when did they say it?

DS only started to babble at around 10 months with just baba - he's now almost 14 months and no real words yet. He'll say "dada" when super upset and crying and said "mama" meaningfully once. Other than that, I just get babbles....

Re: Spinoff to First Words- when did they say it?

I think DS said dog and cat while pointing at them around 12 months (yes those were his first words). He had about 10 words in context at his 15 month appt.
He just started saying Mum when he wants me...

and he was babbling at around 8/9 months but no clear words and none in context.

Re: Spinoff to First Words- when did they say it?

I don't think DS started saying anything in the appropriate context until around 11 or 12 months. He definitely babbled a lot before that, but wasn't actually calling us mama or dada.
