Spinoff to How do you know you are ready to TTC? Money Related
Money is a big factor when bringing a baby into the world. It's one of the reasons we are waiting.
How much do you think you should have saved before TTC?

IMO...I am not sure I can give you a dollar amount on what I think should be saved. I feel there will always be $$ factored in when TTC. In my opion as long as you can take care of it a LO financially and want it then I say go for it. For us there will always be something that we don't do because of $$ but I would rather have a LO then a huge vacay every year.

So here's the thing..............there is never a right time financially to have a child. Save what you can but even if you can't you will find a way to make it work.......trust me!! We had nothing saved when our DD was born and money was tight but we managed. If DH and I waited until everything was perfect financially we would never have kids!!

We know we are ready financially b/c we are already living off 1 income and we have enough left to cover the extra expenses a baby will add on...
We also have money in our savings...
We own a home...
DH has a stable job and is up for a promotion...
I think that pretty much puts us in the position we wanted to be in to start a family...
Now it's just waiting for us to mentally be ready...

I agree with the PPs. There is never a right time financially. I'm not sure having money in the bank is as important as being able to afford the day to day expenses of having a child. There is a lot to consider: daycare, insurance, co-payments, formula, diapers, clothing, toys, other necessities...it adds up. I know once we have a baby we won't be able to save as much as we can now, but I'm also prepared to give up some of the "luxuries" I have now so that I can have my dream of being a Mommy.

If DH and I were to wait until we are financially ready - we may never have children. We both are ready emotionally and know that the rest will fall into place...plus, I am glad I didn't wait too long since we are having fertility problems now and being treated for it.

It's nice to see you on here! I'm sorry to hear that you are having fertility issues. I'm afraid of this myself (I'll be 36 in August) Good luck with TTC! Wishing you losts of baby dust.

it is good to see you here too! Good luck to you also. I am 35 and we have been trying for 14 mos. you just never know what could happen, that is why I am glad we started trying when we did, but I am confident in my doctor and feeling very positive about things lately.

We have nothing in savings, don't own a home and will be going into debt in order to conceive (IVF). For US it's more important to be emotionally and metally ready to have a baby. Of course we do have enough to take care of the child lol we won't have a starving naked kid running around but it will be tight for awhile and it might be a few years before we have house. But hey, if my parents made it work with less we can do it too!

Like a lot of the girls said, you're never gonna be 100% ready no matter how much you try...
but how are we financiallly ready?
DH is a successful business owner (and its finally officially all paid off!)
I've worked with my company for 9 years, have a great salary, benefits, retirement plan, 401k...
We have a pretty decent amount in savings (which will get bigger because we just paid off all of our credit cards which leads us to....)
We have very very little credit card debt now
We own 2 apartments, selling 1 of them currently.
We're going to stay in one of our apartments for a while and continue to save money-our 2 bedroom co-op is great for having a baby in
We're definitely financially, emotionally, mentally, physically ready to be parents.
