Spinoff to Jess' Post: Working out of the Country
If you wanted to do it, but your spouse is opposed to it, what would you do?
Let's say it's a 6 month - 1 year committment and you do not have children.

I would probably still go. in the grand scheme of marriage, that is not a long time..and there are always long weekend trips and such.

Re: Spinoff to Jess' Post: Working out of the Country
I have no desire to leave my husband or NYC. If the situation were reversed I would seriously think about going with him for a month and then coming back.
This is the most old fashioned, stand by your man thing I have ever said

Re: Spinoff to Jess' Post: Working out of the Country
I would definitely consider doing it. It's an incredible opportunity and it's likely that I wouldn't have another opportunity like that. I would hate to not go and then regret it.
On the flipside, it would be a very difficult decision if DH was opposed to it. I wouldn't want to go and then have him resenting me for making the decision.
So to answer the question, I probably would go if it was 6 months. If it was a year and DH was adamantly opposed, I probably wouldn't go.

I'm old school.
To me it would be no fun working away from my DH knowing that I won't see him until who knows when. That to me isn't an enjoyable, wonderful experience. I would be sad....

The opportunity is available to me...and I asked DH about it, and he said he'd come w/me...but is worried that he won't have a job to come back to. I don't think that's the case, but it's a legitimate "reason."

I don't think I would. I can't see leaving him for 6 months for a job.

I know you work for JP. My MIL works there too ... the opportunities are for the ones that GO overseas and put their time in (especially for women) ... I would do it in a heartbeat! One of her friends/coworkers just came back from a 2-year stint in London.

looking it it like that, I would be sad too.
but, when you guys could have say, 6 mini vacations...like one weekend meeting in Paris...the next London...etc etc...then, I think it might add some spice..
and London IS the home of Agent Provacateur

IMO, jobs come and go, but this is not an everyday opportunity.
Would he be able to work as well, in the country you go to?

I'm getting the itch!!!! And if your MIL's friend works for JP that did this...I'd appreciate if you'd put them in contact w/me b/c I have plenty of JP related questions.

I also want to state that this is not a job opportunity but a career opportunity. I feel there is a HUGE difference between the two.

hmm, see for Leo it's a bit less daunting, b/c he's an accountant..a field with greater need.
I can see how Ricky might be a little sketchy about it (and also b/c while there, he wouldn't necessarily have a job either...and you'd be bringing home all the bacon..that could be another thing) but it may also provide some great new filmmaking ideas/experiences...

He's in Sports (Baseball) Sales and Production....I'm sure he could find something...but we have plenty of time to look for something. If he can't find something, then I wouldn't go.

tell him to look into Sky Sports. they are the big sports newscaster in Britain.
tell him also to start liking football (and I mean the British kind)

Just last night we were watching the NY Redbulls game and he said he would definitely work in football.

That's true. If it would be a great career opportunity and I was making enough $$ for both of us to live, vacation, etc, then i'm sure we would do it... together.
Would your company be paying for housing, transportation or anything like that? Are you guaranteed a job back in the US after a certain amt of time?

Would he legally be able to work there? I know someone that went to London for work, and his GF went with him, but she couldn't work there for Visa reasons.
His job was paying for everything, so she didn't have to, and she was thinking of switching fields anyway , so she did that when they came back.

Re: Spinoff to Jess' Post: Working out of the Country
I stayed in the US even though I had a chance to work with a designer in London a few years ago. I stayed here b/c DH was very unhappy that I was going to leave.
