The opportunity is available to me...and I asked DH about it, and he said he'd come w/me...but is worried that he won't have a job to come back to. I don't think that's the case, but it's a legitimate "reason."
IMO, jobs come and go, but this is not an everyday opportunity.
Would he be able to work as well, in the country you go to?
He's in Sports (Baseball) Sales and Production....I'm sure he could find something...but we have plenty of time to look for something. If he can't find something, then I wouldn't go.
Would he legally be able to work there? I know someone that went to London for work, and his GF went with him, but she couldn't work there for Visa reasons.
His job was paying for everything, so she didn't have to, and she was thinking of switching fields anyway , so she did that when they came back.
I think spouses are granted a visa, but gf's/bf's are not.

Ah, ok. It probably also depends on the country, but I awlays thought that if 1 person was a citizen, the spouse could get a visa, but I wasn't sure how it worked if 1 person just had a work visa through their job.

Re: Spinoff to Jess' Post: Working out of the Country
I would have tried to think about this before I got married, because once you're married you really have to value what you spouse wants. If he/she does not support you I would think twice before just going ahead and doing it. You made vows to each other and would feel strongly if roles were reversed and your spouse made a huge change without your support. Of course, I would try to convince my spouse and gain their support. Many people are separated 6 mos, its really not a dealbreaker IMO, on the other hand a year is getting up there.

Re: Spinoff to Jess' Post: Working out of the Country
I think it depends on the location of the assignment. I spent 6 weeks in Mumbai, India without my husband and I missed him terribly!! It is not feasible to have a "weekend" trip to India.

This opportunity was not presented to me before we got married, so it was never a thought in my mind beforehand.

Re: Spinoff to Jess' Post: Working out of the Country
We would probably jump at the chance. We have friends who are moving to London for 2 years (with kids - 6 and 3 yr) because the husband got a HUGE opportunity he couldn't pass up.
IMO - 1-2, even 3 years is such a small part of your life to pass on that kind of opportunity.

Oh, God, that story.
Chris - I hope that your DH gets on board - the opportunity sounds fantastic. If he hears you say that you're seriously considering going without him, would that light a fire under his arse?

I am going to speak to him this evening seriously about it though.

JW took me to London for my 30th birthday. We both LOVED it. I could totally spend 6 months in London.
