Spinoff to Kids and Grapes - (and Dogs)
I have been meaning to post this for a while and forgot until I saw the previous post.
I recently took my dog to the vet and I asked her about being concerned about the dog gaining weight now that DD throws all of her tablefood on the floor. Her response to me was that she would be less concerned about her gaining and more concerned about what she is eating.
Apparently grapes and raisins can kill dogs. It affects their kidneys and they can die from just one grape or raisin. She told me that it is more concentrated in raisins so they are more dangerous. She also said that the affect is different in each dog. I know my old dog had many grapes with no problems.
She also told me that onions and garlic are bad for them too but in much larger doses.
I was surprised that I had never heard this before (I mean we all know about chocolate) but when I double checked with a friend who is a vet she told me that this is a new finding - they didn't even know about it when she was in vet school.
Please be careful with the grapes and raisins around the dogs!

Yes, grapes and raisins are bad. Onions are more toxic than garlic. I know this first hand.
One of my dogs got on the kitchen table when we werent home and there were garlic pills on the table. Well, needless to say, they ate them. They threw them up but we didnt know which dog threw it up. Anyway, I called the vet who told me to call the poison control center. The poison control center told me to take them to the emergency room.
They docs over there told me that its a possiblity that my dogs were now gonna have some blood disorder (some kind of anemia that can be deadly) and they might need several blood transfusions. They kept them overnight and induced vomiting and gave them that charcoal stuff. It cost me 1800.00 total.
They ended up being fine, thank goodness. I think them throwing it up helped plus all the charcoal they gave them. Their poops were black after that which was friggin hysterical.
Anyway, I just wanted to add that all these things are very toxic to dogs and that you have to be careful what our kids give the dogs. My DD always feeds the dogs but i try and keep an eye on what it is.
