Spinoff to model thread...is thinner more beautiful? fixed pic

we are a society obsessed with food and dieting...

so I ask you, do you think it's the "thinner the better" how closely do you attach your attractiveness, desireablity, and to your weight and body?

WHY do we need to look at "beautiful" people so much...and why do they all look THE SAME?

For me I do not think thinner is better. Beauty come in all size and form. Once a person takes their health into account by exercising and eating right that is al that matters. One do not have to to be thin to be beautiful.

I cant see the first pic. But reading magazines and seeing these people on TV makes me feel bad about myself sometimes. I know it shouldnt, but its sort of shoved in your face.

And you are an adult. Think of the kids that are growing up with this image of "thinner is better". It's ingrained in them.

But then you can say the same about older people who grew up with the image that a shapely body (big boobs too) is better.

Which one is right and wrong? The view of beauty changes, I don't think there is much that can be done about that.

Same here...people that are "too" skinny are unattractive. I have a friend that is naturally skinny. She gained weight when sh ehad her baby, and I actually prefer her with the weight. her face is more filled out and she has a softer look.

Speaking as someone who constantly obsesses with her weight and is her biggest critic I think that thinner is not always beautiful. I prefer toned bodies with curves...however that is not to say that I don't look at some of these models and feel envious...I know its STUPID but when you have major body issues like I do - you can't help but compare. Re: Spinoff to model thread...is thinner more beautiful? fixed pic

I think from a design stand point it is easier to sell a garment on a thin person. Having said that I do not think beauty has anything to do with it in that sense. It is just a means to drape & display the product. If it were about beauty then the designers would not do crazy makeup and hair.

As far as true visual beauty, i feel that there are so many factors involved that I could not merely say thinner is more beautiful, or bigger is better. jmo

I'm surprised that there are women not yet familiarized with Venus...the one and only goddess of love. So thanks for the art lesson J! Chat Icon

To answer, thinner is def NOT more attractive. I think it's cultural though and has to do with how you're raised. I was raised to believe that real women have curves (love the movie, BTW) and spanish men love a little meat on the bones of their women. It's all about being voluptious. Big butts, tiny waists, thick legs...these are the things I grew up with as "OK"...and luckily, I married a traditionalist! Chat Icon

I dont connect my looks/weight/body to anyone. I like my curves, except the belly curve. Chat Icon Chat Icon But not because models dont have any fat.

WHY do we need to look at "beautiful" people so much...and why do they all look THE SAME?

This one's easy - it's genetics and evolution. We are programmed to find certain features more attractive than others for the simple fact of passing on good genes. So we look for symbols of fertility and genetics that indicate good overall health - fuller breasts, healthy shiny hair, facial symmetry, etc.

It's funny because most of the time, these super skinny (the emaciated ones) models go against everything nature tells us to find attractive. Yet the fashion industry tries to cram it down our throats as attractive. Or whatever, they are just trying to show their clothes.

No, I don't think "the thinner the better". But that's too much of a generalization anyway. How much does weight factor into my opinion of attractiveness for ME - alot. But it's not the defining factor by any means.

When you say that, I think of Salma Hayek, definitely a body I wish I had.
