i like someone who is trim and toned not "skinny"
what do you think of Boticelli's Venus? his rendition of the woman of all women..the Goddess of Love?
not for nothing...but it IS UGLEE
and the girl you picked for TODAY...is actually pretty IMO
but that is me...
i don't think people need to be SUPER thin to be pretty though
I totally agree...

that's fair. the thing is, at one point is WAS considered beautiful.
why are bones now more attractive than fat? is it b/c we are now a society where there is so much...
I am just asking questions here..
I think they are both beautiful in the face but if I had to be either of them (who am I kidding, i have been BOTH of them in my life) I'd probably pick Venus...

I think from a design stand point it is easier to sell a garment on a thin person. Having said that I do not think beauty has anything to do with it in that sense. It is just a means to drape & display the product. If it were about beauty then the designers would not do crazy makeup and hair.
As far as true visual beauty, i feel that there are so many factors involved that I could not merely say thinner is more beautiful, or bigger is better. jmo
Totally agree.
As far as fashion goes, it's not about the models - it's about the clothes, the fashion and how it's displayed.

Re: Spinoff to model thread...is thinner more beautiful? fixed pic
i personally don't think bones is beautiful
i don't think i know ANYONE who actually thinks it is..
aside from those with body dysmorphic disorder...
what i do think is a HEALTHY fit body is stunning and the best kind to have
heavier IMO isn't better... Curves are nice...
BUT the interpretation of Venus in that pic...
seems like a OLD, Chunky, out of shape woman....and back in the day they DIED at like age 40...
HEALTHY people IMO should be of the utmost importance now a days...

No - I do not equate beauty with thinness. ALthough, I do strive for the thinner look myself (if that makes any sense) I feel more healthy that way.

Re: Spinoff to model thread...is thinner more beautiful? fixed pic
exactly, back then they valued softness, plush bodies
now, the INDUSTRY has us believing having any fat on you in unattractive.
healthy should be the optimum word. people keep saying some people are naturally thin, and that is absolutely true. but some people are naturally heavy, and they are not reflected.
I am not as big as Venus, not as thin as the model. I am curvy, i have muscles..I can run 5 miles no problem..I work out at the gym..but I sometimes still think i am too big. it's a shame.
oh, and for the girl who made a comment about cellulite, I think we can all relax with that. there was a girl at the gym with "fatter" legs than mine, much less muscle defintion or shape...and LESS cellulite on her legs than on mine. point being, fat or not, you can get it.

Re: Spinoff to model thread...is thinner more beautiful? fixed pic

but the interpretation of what she looks like is based on what the avg woman looked like back then
IMO ...i prefer a healthy look

I guess we agree to disagree because while she certainly has lower stomach flab, the upper section is divided...into abs, not rolls.
But anyway, I think she's beautiful.

Re: Spinoff to model thread...is thinner more beautiful? fixed pic
she is small on the top, definitely has a defined upper torso
the softness is in her lower abdomen...where the womb would be, and in the hips and thighs.
she is in no danger of dying from heart disease, definitely not unhealthy by any standard.
the model is not necessarily unhealthy either, just judged by a different standard.

Re: Spinoff to model thread...is thinner more beautiful? fixed pic
The perception of beauty if often associated with wealth. Wealthy women back in Boticelli's days were pale skinned and rounder whereas the poor were thin and dark/tanned. The wealthy sat around and ate and the poor worked with little food, outdoors.
The idea of beauty has changed so much...in the 80s a sign of wealth=beauty was to be thin with dark/tanned skin - always outside at the tennis court, beach, etc. Now it's to be thin with pale skin - we know what the sun does to our skin now.
I think healthy is key - eating right, taking care of your body - that's what is beautiful (to me).

I wouldn't mind one bit!! Like I wrote earlier, a body like that is actually looked at as beautiful in my culture. Men find that attractive. What a crazy concept!

thin and fit are not one and the same.
just as big and unfit are not either.
some of these girls couldn't run around the block without passing out.
I think what I am getting at is that perhaps we could look at a bigger picture, instead of looking at the size of the azz or the "rolls" on the belly.
I would rather be a bit heavier than too skinny, but then again, I have a big head...it looks AWFUL when I am super thin!

Yes, you nailed it! Thin and fit and big and unfit aren't one and the same. Until that changes, people's perceptions of beauty won't change.
Anyway, you do NOT have a big head.

no no...I really just wanted to post about beauty "ideals" and how they've changed.
I put her pic intentionally, b/c she actually looked better than most.
the sad truth though is that MANY of these girls are not naturally like that, and they kill themselves trying to get there.
if they standards were broadened, more body types would be "accepted" as beautiful, and I think women in general would be their PERSONAL healthiest, rather trying to achieve something that is unnatural for them...

WHY do we need to look at "beautiful" people so much...and why do they all look THE SAME?
This one's easy - it's genetics and evolution. We are programmed to find certain features more attractive than others for the simple fact of passing on good genes. So we look for symbols of fertility and genetics that indicate good overall health - fuller breasts, healthy shiny hair, facial symmetry, etc.
It's funny because most of the time, these super skinny (the emaciated ones) models go against everything nature tells us to find attractive. Yet the fashion industry tries to cram it down our throats as attractive. Or whatever, they are just trying to show their clothes.
No, I don't think "the thinner the better". But that's too much of a generalization anyway. How much does weight factor into my opinion of attractiveness for ME - alot. But it's not the defining factor by any means.
There are two sometimes opposing forces what we naturally find attractive and what we're told to find attractive by the media.

I always thought Boticelli's venus was beautiful. She has muscles and curves.
