Spinoff to My Gym - Did your DC get sick after s/he went to a Gymboree, My Gym, etc?
I want to start taking DS when he is 3 months old but DH thinks I should wait because he thinks DS will get sick if he goes to those classes. DH thinks I should wait until DS is about 1 year old.

Re: Spinoff to My Gym - Did your DC get sick after s/he went to a Gymboree, My Gym, etc?
DC didn't get any more sick from Gymboree than they did from relatives coming over, going out to the store, me getting sick from coworkers and bringing that home, etc, etc....
It's actually a GOOD thing for DC to get sick once in a while. It builds up their immune system, making them healthier for the rest of their lives.
Life is full of germs, might as well get used to them.

Yes my DD has gotten sick from gymboree in the past it is rare but has happened. But not in the first few months we went - she got sick when she was closer to 11 months. We didn't start doing a lot of those type of classes until she was 8 months old. I think if you take them to any classes - regardless you run the risk of having them exposed. Unfortunately unless you live in a bubble you never know who is sick (you can be contagious before symptoms appear so a meaning well parent could bring a child to class who appears well and doesn't get sick until later that day). It is just the chance that you take.

Not me but my niece did, constantly!
My sis had her in Gymboree and she always got sick from there.

Age doesn't matter.
Your DC will get sick no matter when you start classes/daycare/school. It is just the way of life.

I should probably add that DS had heart surgery last month. His surgery was a success so it isn't like catching a cold would effect his heart.
I know he has to get exposed to germs eventually. I also know that DH will guilt trip me to death if he catches something. He will totally blame me for taking him to Gymboree or My gym.

What does your ped say about keeping DS out of those types of activities?

We didn't start those kinds of classes until DD was 1- but only because that was my preference.
Yes- she picked up a cold almost every time we went. I really feel it's to be expected anytime you have multiple kids using equipment. It didn't stop me from taking her though.
At 3 months though, it's really more about you and your child interacting, so I would think the exposure to germs is pretty limited. For example, you wouldn't be using the ball pit at that age.

Our pediatrician recommended that we wait a bit but it was ultimately up to us. She said the exact same thing about going to the mall, etc. I've been pretty much on house arrest since DS was born because of his heart condition. I'm very pleased at how well he recovered. I wouldn't risk his heart for some fun. I just don't feel like we can shelter him forever.

That is what I was thinking. The baby classes seem like most of the babies lay on a receiving blanket and/or we are holding them.
I plan to go to a trial class. Maybe I will take disinfectant wipes.

Re: Spinoff to My Gym - Did your DC get sick after s/he went to a Gymboree, My Gym, etc?
Given that DS has had heart surgery, I would check with his doctor. Has he had his first round of shots? If so, you can probably do a class, that's what I would wait for, otherwise as other people said, the classes aren't much worse than other public places.
DS started a class at 4 months, he didn't get sick until he was 9 or 10 months old. He has had a bunch of colds since then, but it is to be expected.
Catching colds is actually good to help build up their immune systems, so bringing them into these environments is helpful, but since he did recently have surgery, I would check.

DD got sick more because of daycare than My Gym. But, it is the risk you take for putting them in that type of class.
IMO, I feel that your DS would benefit from that type of class more once he is a little older. We put our DD in when she was only crawling and pulling up to standing at 7/8 months. Even then there was a limited amount activities she could do.

Given your DS's situation, I would wait it out - At 3 months old I don't think he'll get much out of the classes anyway. I would wait for 6 months.

Re: Spinoff to My Gym - Did your DC get sick after s/he went to a Gymboree, My Gym, etc?
DS did gymboree for one session (starting about 8.5 mos old) and we did music together pretty constantly starting when he was about 9 mos old. We also started library classes around a year. He never got sick from any of these but, I am very diligent about wiping down mine and his hands afterwards and I try to keep him away from things I see have been obviously drooled on/mouthed by other kids.
That said, I agree with the other posters that at this age (3mos) the risks (especially with your DC having had surgery) do not outweight the benefits. I've been to classes where there have been very young babies around this age and they really seem more annoyed my the situation than happy by it. I don't think it would be any better than you putting on music in your house or playing with toys with them at this age. But, this is jmo. HTH!

I think you guys are probably right. DS doesn't even enjoy toys yet. I bought him all these new toys recently and he's not interested at 2.5 months. He just started liking being in his playmat. No need to rush him. I think I'll wait until he gets his 6 month immunizations and can at least sit up. Hopefully by that time, he'll enjoy playing more.
