spinoff to my own thread, making your own food?

What do you use. I'm tempted to buy the beaba baby cook, but a friend of mine just steamed everthing and used an hand immersion blender...I've also heard the bullet etc...
Also is it just straight fruit and veggies do you add sugar or anything like that...any good sites I should be checking out!
THANKS!!!

I just used the magic bullet for my DS. I boiled and steamed veggies and then put them in the bullet to blend. I never added anything. As my DS was closer to one years old I added things like garlic and olive oil, but I have never added sugar or salt to anything he eats even at 17 months old. When I buy things I am not making from scratch I buy no salt and sugar added as much as possible. I will do the same for my DD.

If you have a bullet, food processor, or blender it will definitely be good enough. Chat Icon Chat Icon

I used a small food proccessor.

I just steamed the food and then put it in there. In the beginning I just made one thing at a time and made it really thin. Then I started mixing fruits and vegetables. Like apples and peaches etc.. As DS got older and more used to eating them I would make them a little thicker.

I used the magic bullet and it worked great. I took out a bunch of books from the library. In the beginning, I would only add some water or the water it cooked in depending of what I was making. As time went on I added some spices never any sugar or salt. There is no need for sugar or salt they do not need it and have not been introduced to it so they do not miss it.

Here are a few links that I found to be helpful:

Re: spinoff to my own thread, making your own food?

I made my own baby food for a while when my kids were babies. I just steamed them and then used my food processor, adding a tiny bit of water if it was too thick. It's really pretty easy. Then I'd put them in ice cube trays and pop them into freezer bags when they were frozen.

I never added sugar or anything, but I'd make each fruit and veggie separately and then I'd combine two cubes of food to have them try different combos (banana sweet potato, apples and carrots, etc.).

The Beaba Baby Cook looks awesome but I'm not sure it's worth the money.

I also read once that you canm use canned fruit or veggies in water. I am going to look into that as long as I can find organic. My SIL told me that Golden Delicious Apples make a great puree-steam them then peel off teh skins then puree

I wish I had the magic bullet earlier than I got it - it worked great for making baby food

I make all of DD's food. I either steam or bake the fruits/veggies based on what it is, then puree it in my food processor.

If you are looking at the Beaba, I just thought I'd point out that at one point, it was not BPA free, so by heating food in there you are exposing your child to BPA. They are planning to come out with a BPA free version, so I'd look to make sure that is the one you have. The change is very recent. My friend got one a couple of months ago and is returning it because it has BPA.

It gives helpful charts on what to introduce when, recipes, nutrional values, etc.

Re: spinoff to my own thread, making your own food?

The Wholesome Baby Food site that everyone recommended is awesome.

You do not add anything to anything.

Steam your veggies and puree in a blender, or food processor...whichever you prefer. Magic bullet, hand emersion (sp?)

When pureeing peas and green beans I suggest a blender in order to make sure you puree the skins enough.

It's super easy...super healthy and you can make big batches at a time and freeze them. Save TONS of money.

I can't wait to make DD's foodChat Icon I recvd the Beaba Cook as a gift and can't wait to use it. I like it because it steams it, defrosts it, purees it all in one container. I am lazy like thatChat Icon

The Beaba has been BPA Free since 2005. They just had to change the ingredients in the bowl. Just wanted to clarify that.

I have heard great things about the beaba baby cook and I'm tempted to buy it. I heard it is a bit of a pain to clean.

Re: spinoff to my own thread, making your own food?

my cuisinart is a deluxo edition.... it came with a small bowl/blade attachment... just put the small bowl into the large bowl and whirl away as usual Chat Icon

I've heard that babies don't metabolize salt and fat too well... so avoid them. I made a WONDERFUL applesauce... I just peeled oranic red delicious apples, barely covered it with water, and nuked until soft. I pureed it in the food processor. It tasted great... and it's Eryk-approved Chat Icon

I put most of it into an ice cube tray and froze it into 1 oz servings Chat Icon
