Re: spinoff to not tipping... do you ever tell management of excellent service?

Yes, definitely.

It's become the norm to get so so or bad service in so many stores that when someone actually goes out of their way to help me, I make a point to tell their manager.
It happened once in Home Depot - a guy stayed with us for a while talking to us about various options for screen doors and what we want to look for. We were so taken aback by his willingness to talk to us and answer our questions nicely that we wanted to do him a favor in return and let his manager know.

There are so many times i've received shoddy service in a store - i.e the cashier barely even looks at you during a transaction, or is so distracted by talking to other co-workers that you feel like you're intruding by asking them to ring you up..
i've often times felt like going up to a manager and pointing out the bad customer service.. but i feel like half the time the manager wouldn't care and would just dismiss me.

so in most cases i'd rather reward the good than complain about the bad
