Spinoff to sewing: Did you have Home Ec in HS?

I did not have a home ec class in HS.

I know most NYC Public HS's no longer provide them . Not sure about LI...

I seriously think there should be a required home ec curriculum. I mean you learn so many basic skills. I know our parents CAN teach us (and believe me my mom tried lol) but at that age I would have been more keen on learning if I HAD to to get a good grade.

So did YOU take home ec? Was it helpful in teaching you basic cooking, sewing etc. skills?

I went to a NYC public school and had it in Junior High School. It was a magnet school for G&T students so we probably had more fund than your average public school. But that class is where I learned the basics like how to chop an onion, what a simmer is as opposed to a boil, how to make an omelette. I don't remember learning how to sew though.

We were required to take it in middle school, in high school it was an elective. I went to school on Long Island.

ETA: We sewed a sweatshirt and a pillow using a sewing machine. Despite having a mother and grandmother that were very good at sewing, I didn't do so well. Most of the cooking we did was baking, which I was doing at home with my mother at that point anyway. I remember also being taught how to fill in a check correctly.

I'm pretty sure it was required in my Jr. HS along with Technology which was basically a wood shop class. I barely passed Home Ec lol. My sewing was terrible and the food we made wasn't that great. I remember making pancakes and pizza. My pizza had a huge bubble in the middle of it lol. We were only 12 or 13, since it was JR. High...so I think I would've benefitted more if I had taken it in 11th or 12th grade.

Re: Spinoff to sewing: Did you have Home Ec in HS?

I chose other b/c I had it in middle school. Home EC and Tech Ed- Home Ec was cooking and sewing and Tech Ed- was wood shop. At my local high school, I didn't go there, they offered Cooking for Singles which was very popular.

I took home ec in 7th and 8th and cooking in 10th. I actually would have loved to teach home ec- but I don't even think it's a licence/certification area any more. I teach in NYC and think it's a shame the kids don't have those classes. The rooms for industrial arts and home ec had to be turned into regular classrooms because of overcrowding.

Re: Spinoff to sewing: Did you have Home Ec in HS?

I did in middle school and I continued some of the classes in high school. I loved home ec, even went on to babysit my home ec teachers kids. In high school we took a class where we had the flour babies. I think that was child development.

Re: Spinoff to sewing: Did you have Home Ec in HS?

In Jr. High there were some electives offered - baking, cooking, sewing, if I remember correctly. I took baking one semester. There were no home ec classes that I can recall in HS. I was a NYC school student, and in an honors program, so all that was encouraged were AP classes. I really would have benefited from more practical skills!

I took it in Middle School and loved it!

The Middle School I currently work in offers it, and the majority of the students take it as well.

Re: Spinoff to sewing: Did you have Home Ec in HS?

I chose other... Home Ec (now called Family & Consumer Sciences) was offered at my HS but I didn't take it because my elective was always band. With that being said, we were required to take it in middle school.

Now it is still a requirement for 3 yeras in middle school and all students are required to take a 1/2 year of health in order to graduate HS.

I took it in 6th and 7th grade - it was required. In 6th grade, we sewed and in 7th grade, we cooked/baked.

In HS, it was an elective class.
