Re: Spinoff to sewing: Did you have Home Ec in HS?

I took almost every home ec class that was offered. My friends used to tease me b/c I took so many.

We required to take a basic home ec class in Jr high.

Then in highschool I took:

Culinary Arts
Houseing & Interior Design
Fashion, Sewing and Textiles
Child Develpment

My HS didn't offer anything like that. Except for a typing class, the curriculum was purely academic/college prep.

Re: Spinoff to sewing: Did you have Home Ec in HS?

in Jr we had it and I LOVED IT!!!! Wished I could go back and take it again so useful. In high school they kinda phased it out and pushed typing/computers.

Re: Spinoff to sewing: Did you have Home Ec in HS?

We had home and careers - I know I learned how to sew and I know we did a pillow project. None of this does anything for me now - I did it once and never again. Heck, I can barely remember even sewing my pillow project! I *think* I sewed a shamrock on it. It went in the closet with my brother's Guns-n-Roses pillow from seven years earlier Chat Icon

It wasn't offered in HS. I did take a Home Ec class in middle school.

I had to sew something Saturday. I stink at it.

Re: Spinoff to sewing: Did you have Home Ec in HS?

I had to take it in middle school, both 7th and 8th grade.

7th grade was alllll about cooking and I made an ugly pillow.
8th grade I made an uglier sweatshirt (extra credit if you wore it to school, which I wanted because my sewing sucked).

BUT in 8th grade, there was a finance segment when they taught us the basics of keep a checkbook and very basic budgets. So it wasn't all terrible.

eta - boys and girls were required to take both home ec AND shop

it was required in middle school, honestly, it was a gigantic waste of time. Thank God it was only half a year.

Re: Spinoff to sewing: Did you have Home Ec in HS?

I went to two HS's - one Catholic - did not offer it or anything like it. The other public - offered them, but was so busy taking other things I couldn't take them.

I think every kid in school should have to take a class like this that includes basic financial planning...savings, credit cards, saving for retirement, etc. Nothing too deep but at least the basics.

I took it in Junior High...

By the way, I LOVE how so many of you still call it "junior high" and not "middle school"......It will never be middle school to me! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Spinoff to sewing: Did you have Home Ec in HS?

Yep we had it and had to take it.
I actually enjoyed it.
It was fun to cook and bake and stuff during the school day and a nice break from math, science etc.
We did learn to sew- we made a stuffed animal. I was actually good at it, but totally forgot about how to sew and now I can't even thread a needle. Chat Icon

Re: Spinoff to sewing: Did you have Home Ec in HS?

We had a mandatory class in Junior High. I think it was just one semester. We learned to sew, cook and how to write checks/balance a checkbook.
