Way back when, home ec was offered in my junior high, not high school. And way back when, I took it.

I took it in 7th and 8th grade. I learned how to sew, that was about it.

It was mandatory for half the year in the 7th grade. The other half of the year was shop.

ETA I have NO CLUE if it was offered at my high school ... I don't think it was, but I really couldn't say for sure.

Re: Spinoff to sewing: Did you have Home Ec in HS?

We didn't have anything in middle/high school, but we had something called "Social Studies Workshop" in elementary school (through 6th grade) where we did cooking, sewing, knitting, as well as more esoteric stuff like sheering wool and weaving.

Home Ec. and Technology were both requirements to graduate from my high school. I learned to sew on a sewing machine, how to cook, and bake in Home Ec. I learned how to make a CO2 car and a gum ball machine in Tech. As an adult I regret never taking shop class where they taught auto mechanics but no girls ever took that class.

I voted no even though I just remembered that I did take it in Jr. High. (It wasn't offered in my high school as far as I know... NYC school.) But in the high school where I teach, these are some of the most popular classes (although a lot of that has to do with the phenomenal teacher we have.) The kids love love love it (and her).

We did but you were selected. You were either given home
Ec or industrial arts. I was in industrials arts. So I made a lamp. A gumball machine and key chains. Pretty safe to say I can use a router.

We had to take home ec in middle school, not high school. I do remember them teaching us to sew.

Yes, I took it. I learned how to sew which was helpful. We did some baking also which did teach me a lot about measurements.

Re: Spinoff to sewing: Did you have Home Ec in HS?

No they didn't offer it in my high school.
I wish they did though... it would have been very useful! I can't sew or cook well & maybe it would have helped me.
My aunt was a home ec teacher on Long Island, like 20+ years ago but has since retired. Do schools still offer it???

I had it in middle school and I believe it might have even been 2 years (6th and 7th?). I remember making a pretzel, a cupcake, sewing a stuffed animal, and learning how to set a table. It may have been required.

I went to Dawnwood (Middle Country Schools).
