I would purchase the house I am renting and stay put. I love the area I'm in. The schools are great. I would use the money to spruce up the house.

Well, it depends on how much money we're talking! $1,000,000 - I would move and buy a bigger house than what we have now in a nice area, but nothing crazy. $100,000,000 - I don't think I'd buy HUGE but I would get something very nice.

This happened to someone I know. They stayed put in their middle class neighborhood and made some (relatively minor) improvements to their house for their own comfort, because now they could. And instead of spending the money on a big house in an upscale neighborhood and the corresponding taxes, they invested for retirement and will likely be retiring early.

Depends upon how much.

I'd probably keep what I have and really finish it to the max... several things I cut out of our original home redo.

I'd buy a timeshare that allowed me to go to many foreign destinations.

Probably buy a place in CA... DH goes out there enough for business and a lot of DH's family is out there. East coast family could use it as well.

Definitely a place in Ireland. This past week really reminded me how much I miss my extended family over there.

Oh, and with all of these places I think I'd need a plane and a pilot's license

ETA: Of course, I'm thinking "powerball" type money

I would move. Not necessarily to a chi chi area, but I would want a bigger house etc...maybe a new construction. If I move to a chi chi area, I get stuck with the snobby neighbors and I def do not want that!!

I love where I am and wouldnt move. Although, this doesn't mean I wouldn't put a HUGE inground swimming pool w/ a nice slide and waterfall.........

I'd move, but stay in my neighborhood and rent my current house for more income.

I would move (we are moving w/in 2 years anyway), but I would pay off the mortgage and rent it out - starting my new real estate empire.

I'd biuy a reasonable priced home, make a sick backyard and decorate it exactly as I wanted and invest the rest. I live in an area where the COL is cheaper than NY though so I could probably do the house thing for 350-400K.

Depends on how rich. Don't know if we would necessarily move, but we would definitely buy some place either lake front or with a lot more land for horses.

plain old rich, we'd buy all of the houses that border our property, including the one on the Lake. Knock most of them down, leave our house as the guest house & build a new house on the lake.
I'd get horses, goats & other animals & build a barn on the rest of the land.


uber-rich, major acreage on the north fork for my farm, cottage on the south fork for fun & keep our house for family to use as a vacation spot.

I love my house and neighborhood now but if I struck it rich, I would buy a nice rural piece of property, build a house and get lots of animals (pigs etc )

If I got "rich" that would equal retirement and a definate move out of NY, no snow and alot for the dollar, TEXAS, North Dallas to be exact

Absolutely move. We have plans to do so down the line anyway. Bigger house, with no to-do projects Same town is absolutely fine, as is any of the neighboring towns. DH would want to live on the water.

We're trying to move to a certain town/school district, so I would buy a bigger, nicer house in that school district...
