Spinoff to the party post... Would this offend you?

Let's say you invited a few couples and their kids over one night for pizza and ice cream, and for the kids to swim in the pool and play. Would you be offended if your friend's boyfriend asked if he could bring chicken for us to grill?

This did happen to me and honestly, I was pretty offended but maybe I was unreasonable? I felt like pizza and ice cream wasn't good enough for him and well, we didn't FEEL LIKE grilling and having to make a big deal. It was just a very casual little get together ON A WEEK NIGHT for a couple of hours before all the kids had to go to bed.

Thoughts?

I wouldn't be offended. If he wanted to bring the chicken and grill it himself I would be fine with it. He may have some type of food allergy.

Re: Spinoff to the party post... Would this offend you?

this would not offend me b/c I am a PITA and if I don't like something, I will ask to bring something I will eat.

I wouldn't do it if I don't know the person well, but if I do...I will ask to bring something else.

I won't expect the host to work extra to accommodate me (I wouldn't expect them to provide me with an alternate) I do that myself.

it's probably annoying...but I eat what I likes and I likes what I eat.

Yeah I would think that's rude. If I invite you over for pizza and ice cream and you don't want pizza and ice cream, then don't come. If I invite you over for a bbq--then by all means, you can bring some chicken and I'll grill it up.

But it kind of negates the purpose of the casual invite if he asks to bring something for you to cook. Duh, that was the point of you saying "pizza"

If you said you were doing some grilling (hot dogs and hamburgers), I would definitely not be offended by someone offering to bring other meat. However, for them to "volunteer" your grill isn't appropriate, IMO.

Let me add, this was only the 2nd time I had met him (and I really didn't like him the first time because he is from Europe and made a ton of anti-American comments).

Also, he didn't have a food allergy, if he did, I would totally have understood.

No other grilling was being done at all. It was just a pizza and ice cream party that was supposed to be quick and easy on a week night.

That is exactly how I felt about it.

That would kind of irk me. I would suggest getting a meal from wherever I was ordering the pizza from.

I don't think I would be offended. In this day and age of Atkins diets and all other kinds of diets, maybe the guy is trying to stay away from pizza.

My comment would be that bringing chicken is fine as long as they feel like cooking it. I'm not going to put the extra work in (hence the reason for ordering pizza! Chat Icon ) But if you want to grill it yourself, be my guest!

Oh, that would have been a great response. I never thought of that. Instead, I just told them straight out that we had been grilling all weekend with our families and were having a pizza party to relax and let the kids play and so NO we weren't going to take out the grill. Sorry, but he offended me!

Re: Spinoff to the party post... Would this offend you?

I don't follow why the suggestion would annoy you.

if you didn't feel like it, you could just say "id rather not cook at all" and leave it at that.

if you said NO and showed up with chicken anyway, that would be annoying...but if one doesn't know your thoughts/reasoning and suggests an alternative...I'd go easy.

and I am biased b/c like I said...I am that girl. Chat Icon

ETA: are you sure you were "offended" and not maybe annoyed?

Nah. Maybe he is watching his cholesterol. DH's uncle brought chicken to family dinners for a while after his heart attack.

Maybe it's just that I already didn't like that guy. We weren't friends and I didn't like him from the first day we met. Had it been a good friend, I probably wouldn't have cared, or at least I wouldn't have been sooo annoyed.

I wouldn't be offended.

If he was cooking it, brought enough for everyone and cleaned up the grill afterwards then I'd have no problem.

See now the whole "you bring it--you cook it" thing I don't like--because if I invite you to my home--its so I can entertain you and such and you shouldn't have to "cook" food for yourself while in my house. I think people who say "i'll just do it myself" is a little rude.

Maybe its cause my mom always made me feel like a guest should NEVER do anything in your house like that. They should never have to clean up....cook something....set up....etc. So the idea of someone coming to my house after I invited them for a meal---and cooking it themself...I would not like that at all. I'm weird about my kitchen and stuff---I don't want anyone cooking in it or handling stuff in there but me!

We may have found the true reasons for my serious annoyance about the whole thing. He went off about all of us "crazy" Americans to my friends and told her he wanted to move to Dubai with her. Now, there is nothing wrong with Dubai, nor is there anything wrong with the country in Europe he was from... but his attitude was atrocious.

I don't think its rude at all, a bit odd, but not rude.

Just out of curiosity, is the meat Halal or something? Does he have some dietary requirements that might need catering to?

Re: Spinoff to the party post... Would this offend you?

I wouldn't be offended, but I'd perhaps be slightly annoyed because I'm assuming the reason you're ordering pizza is so you don't have to cook. If it was for a BBQ, then sure, bring whatever you want for the grill. But since it's not, I'd just say sorry, we're not planning on using the grill

Agreed- he could have health reasons for not wanting to eat junk food.
Or he could be one of those super conscientious people when it comes to their diet...someone who has that super strong will power and never cheats.
Wouldn't bother me at all... I would just ask that he grill it himself if I wasnt in the mood to grill...

Re: Spinoff to the party post... Would this offend you?

No, it wouldn't offend me at all.

If I didn't feel like getting the grill out, I'd just say no.

Like Ophelia, I'm that girl, too. I am an extremely picky eater - and I loathe pizza. Unless we were close, I probably wouldn't say anything and would just not order pizza with you guys and would eat when I get home. If I was close, I'd ask if I could order (at my expense) something from the menu or ask if I could bring something that involved no cooking. I might say "That sounds great, can I make a salad for everyone to go along with the pizza?" (then again, if we were close, you'd already know I don't eat pizza!)

*I* wouldn't ask to grill something at your house, but I wouldn't care if someone else asked. If I didn't want to do it, I would just say no.

Maybe he is on a special diet and was trying to stay away from Carbs.
