Yeah I would think that's rude. If I invite you over for pizza and ice cream and you don't want pizza and ice cream, then don't come. If I invite you over for a bbq--then by all means, you can bring some chicken and I'll grill it up.
But it kind of negates the purpose of the casual invite if he asks to bring something for you to cook. Duh, that was the point of you saying "pizza"
ITA!
I would feel put on the spot if someone asked me that. The instinct is to be hospitable and accomodating but your point was no cooking!

It would not have bothered me, but I have many people in my family who are on special diets and would not be able to eat pizza.

They are family though. Does it change anything if it is a guy your friend is dating that you have met once or twice before?

yes...what I think changes everything for you is that you don't like him
not liking someone and then on top of that...they ask you to accommodate them is friggin irksome!

I don't think I would be offended. In this day and age of Atkins diets and all other kinds of diets, maybe the guy is trying to stay away from pizza.
My comment would be that bringing chicken is fine as long as they feel like cooking it. I'm not going to put the extra work in (hence the reason for ordering pizza! ) But if you want to grill it yourself, be my guest!
See now the whole "you bring it--you cook it" thing I don't like--because if I invite you to my home--its so I can entertain you and such and you shouldn't have to "cook" food for yourself while in my house. I think people who say "i'll just do it myself" is a little rude.
Maybe its cause my mom always made me feel like a guest should NEVER do anything in your house like that. They should never have to clean up....cook something....set up....etc. So the idea of someone coming to my house after I invited them for a meal---and cooking it themself...I would not like that at all. I'm weird about my kitchen and stuff---I don't want anyone cooking in it or handling stuff in there but me!
To each his own, I suppose. My reason for mentioning the "you bring it you cook it" is because if I am inviting you over for an easy, casual time where there is going to be no cooking involved: "ordering pizza", and you want to grill chicken, feel free to bring it over. We aren't cooking and if you want it so badly, here is my grill, have fun! I am not going to invite people over with the intentions of having a laid back evening, only to end up having to cook. I am not asking anyone to cook a 5 course meal in my kitchen. You will be using the grill. Personally, if I had special food needs and I needed to impose on someone else, I would not have a problem making it myself.

Soooo friggen irksome. He knows my friend told me what he said about my DH and I (all anti-American stuff since we're such "typical" Americans)... so what in the world he was thinking by asking to use our grill on pizza night is beyond me. And... did I mention, he spent half the night texting anyway (rude) and was arguing with my friend? CAN'T STAND HIM.

Re: Spinoff to the party post... Would this offend you?
No, because I am a super picky eater and almost always bring my own food places. That being said, I would have grilled it before hand and brought it as to not put out the host, or I would have asked the host, “Would you mind if I grill chicken for myself?”
If you are a super picky eater you would probably understand more and want to be more accommodating. When I host I always provide a variety of things because I know how I am. I know what you were saying that you wanted it to be a simple thing, but if you were going to be that put off about it then maybe you shouldn’t have had people over. I hope that doesn’t sound mean, it’s not meant to, but as someone who is sooooo picky (example, I don’t eat cheese or tomatoes…) I can ‘get’ where he was coming from.

Actually, once the grill question came up, I did offer to have a big BBQ on the weekend instead, so that we had the time and energy for it (instead of after work on a week night) but they insisted on coming over that night.

maybe he is a healthy eater or lactose intolerant? I couldn't go to someone's house and eat pizza & ice cream (unless it was soy) cause I would be ill all night, so I sympathize with whatever his reasons may be

I can see why it irked you and I think the easiest solution would have been for him to bring the chicken already cooked/grilled and ready to eat.

I wouldn't be offended...I would want my guest to feel at home and grill if it's what they would rather have.

Re: Spinoff to the party post... Would this offend you?
I wouldn't be offened, I would show him where the grill is and let him do it himself. I know a lot of people who don't like pizza, and it sounds like your house is probably a good time and he didn't want to miss out.

Yeah I would think thats a bit rude. I would be like . Honestly... Its a pizza/ice cream party. If the guest didn't like what I was serving, he/she could eat before they come. Thats what I would do.

Re: Spinoff to the party post... Would this offend you?
I think asking you to grill the food is the impolite part IMO. I would see nothing wrong with him asking you to order something special for him because he doesn't eat pizza. Or for him to bring something already made for himself. But if you are obviously doing a no-cooking get-together then I think it is rude for him to ask you to cook. Especially since you barely know him!

If you said you were doing some grilling (hot dogs and hamburgers), I would definitely not be offended by someone offering to bring other meat. However, for them to "volunteer" your grill isn't appropriate, IMO.
I agree. We've actually been invited to BBQs where it's "bring your own meat" and we know ahead of time there will be grilling involved. But asking you to grill chicken when the invite involves pizza is weird. I don't know if I'd be offended as much as I'd be confused.

I wouldn't be offended at all. Maybe he doesn't eat pizza? I honestly think it's fine and if someone would have asked me that, I would have said sure. At least he asked!

I wouldn't be offended.
If I were in your shoes and didn't feel like grilling (which is totally understandable) I'd just tell them, no, that's not necessary, we'll have plenty of food.
If they persisted, I'd say fine, you can bring the chicken, but why don't you grill it at home and bring it or if you want to cook it here be prepared to cook it yourself and clean everything up the cook and maid are off!

Re: Spinoff to the party post... Would this offend you?
It would not bother me that he wanted to bring his own food - there's plenty of reasons why someone might not want to eat that - health, diet, etc. I would be a little taken aback that he asked me to prepare it for him - I would have offered to order him something different from the restaurant.

I would be a little put off by that
clearly the objective of pizza & ice cream = I don't want to cook (nor should you have to!)

Second time coming over and requesting what you want to eat...UMMM...NO!!!!! At first I was like...Ummm maybe... thinking that it was a good friend that was close to you. I think its incredibly rude to go over a strangers house and request what you want. Eat before you go then.
