Spinoff to wedding gift amount - how about a Sweet 16 that is like a wedding?

Do you give more if a Sweet 16 party is held in a backyard as opposed to a catering hall? Some of these parties are run like a wedding and cost as much. And is it ok to give less for a fancy Sweet 16 than you would for a wedding? As a family of 5 attending, I think $500 is a bit much!

I may be in the minority here, but for something like a sweet 16 I don't give based on the number of people in my family that are attending. I give a flat rate. Personally I think Sweet 16's are silly to make such a big deal out of - it's not a religious milestone or a big life event milestone (like a wedding or shower). They're turning 16. I give $100 - $150. Again, JMHO, but they didn't accomplish anything by turning 16. Its not like they graduated high school or college, or got Baptized or engaged. I don't feel the need to give any more than that.

no I wouldn't give more cause its at a fancy place just like my opinion on weddings not my problem/choice you decided to spend a boat load of money to host a party. I would give the same amount no matter where it was at it and how many people are going.

I would probably give $50 maybe $75 but I doubt even that much.

If we were all going to it I would assume it was family or a good friend I would most def. give $75 maybe $100

I really don't get why people who host all these fancy 1st birthday, communions, sweet 16 etc would expect more money because they host it at a very nice place

Call me crazy but NO way in h-e-l-l I'd be giving anywhere near $500 for a Sweet 16..........I don't even do that for a wedding!! Chat Icon The obvious answer is to give what you can afford but personally, I don't care if it's a fancy bday party or not, it's just a 16 year old's birthday. In all likelihood, I wouldn't give more than a $100 and even that just seems ridiculous to me as bday gift for a friend's kid.

These Sweet 16's are so out of control, hope my DD doesn't have any delusions of DH and I hosting a "mini wedding" for her when she turns 16.

No, I would give the same amount regardless of the venue (as I would for a wedding).

The parents aren't supposed to be pocketing the money to help foot the bill...the kid is supposed to get it.

I have no clue what the "average" is here, but I just had my DD's Communion last month and aside from the godmother, no one gave more than $150--even families of five. FTR, I am not criticizing this, I am supporting it!

That is very generous. For any baptism or communion I've been to (or had for my kids) the average gift was $75, no matter how many people in the family. Most friends gave $50. I don't consider these events "big monetary events" but that's just me.

I COMPLETELY agree. It's their parents choice to spend that kind of money, that's their gift (I would imagine) to the child, no way is that on you to reimburse.

I just recently attended the sweet 16 of one of my students. I gave her the $200 Tiffany heart necklace.

I know you should give what you can afford but what if they think you can afford a lot (even though its not true). I dont want to risk being bad mouthed among the family. I heard from teenagers that go to a lot of sweet 16s that they give $50 each so I just felt like it shoukd be more from adult family members.

sorry if your family will bad mouth you they suck! with that said If you are that concern just do at least $100 maybe $150 I don't even care if you can afford more I don't see why any kid should be getting so much for a freaking sweet 16!

$100 for sweet 16 sounds ok to me. Maybe a little more if it's for a close family member.

I do not equate a sweet 16 to a wedding. You choose to have it in a backyard or a hall that is up to you. $150 is a fine sweet 16 gift, and that would be from either two or. Four of us. If it were a kid going alone 50 is fine.

I alwyas give 100.00 for a baptism or sweet 16. It's a gift..with one of those occasions being a bday present. It's not my responsibility to cushion someone else's child's savings account.

My Sweet 16 was many years ago, 20 actually, and was at a hall. Then, I think my family and family friends gave about $100. Close Aunts & Uncles gave more. I haven't been to one in a long time, but I think that is still more than fine.

$100 and call it a day. Regardless of how many are attending from your family

I agree (unless it is just a kid attending their friend's Sweet 16 party - then I think $50 is fine). Doesn't matter where the party is. I hate the mentality that I should be "paying" for any party. I have no problem giving a gift, but it is not based on what the party giver decides to spend on having the party - EVER.
