spinoff to what 9-10 month olds eat
am i the only one terrified to branch away from the pureed foods? i panic when DS eats a puff. i know i shouldnt, but how can i not?? DS eats oatmeal with stage 2 fruit, yogurt and stage 2 veges and puffs. He's only 8.5 months tho. the ped said we can wait to start meats and stuff. but he said i can start on mashed potatoes and soft stuff. how do u give the food without panicking??

DS is 8.5 months too and believe me, i get scared. but i keep reminding myself that they have to eat "real" food eventually i mean they cant drink formula and have baby food forever kwim. we all did it and turned out just fine. i make sure to watch him closely and he loves it!

Re: spinoff to what 9-10 month olds eat
You just have to start. I too was very nervous before I gave her anything (puffs included!) but she reassured me each time as she just got better and better at chewing, picking up, etc. DH and I took a CPR course and I did read up to refresh before I started. Just made me feel better, more confident. DD has 1/2 of a front tooth, that's it and she eats most table foods- including meats

Re: spinoff to what 9-10 month olds eat
of course it nerve wracking... but go slow, you might be surprised...in a good way...
great soft foods:
green beans and asparagus, the can versions are very soft but enough so they can hold and self feed too.
mashed pototoes - make them lumpier each time
and the puffs, well they disolve rather quickly...have you tried one? they are pretty good!!
good luck - but always trust your mommy gut

Re: spinoff to what 9-10 month olds eat
I was with Ryan (my 1st child) but not so much this time
With Ryan, he got 1/4 of a cheerio at a time, at 9 months. Colin started whole cheerios at 6 months. He is 8 months today and just last week was having pork with us for dinner
He really prefers table food. The other day, he had 2 mini pancakes for breakfast, plus his baby food.
He has no teeth yet.

Re: spinoff to what 9-10 month olds eat
I was at the Ped one day and a Mom sitting next to me (Sean was about 6 months) offered my cheerios for him - I must have had the panicked look on my face b/c she laughed and told me not to do what she did ........
She said she was so horrified at the idea of her son choking that she waiting 'too long' to start solids with him, and he had SUCH a hard time - Gagging, refusing to eat, etc. I have no idea if he would have had those issues anyway, but she felt like she had done him a disservice b/c SHE was so nervous -
So, I took her advice and started him on puffs - and kind of just got over the fear ........I watch him like a hawk w/ everything he puts in his mouth, but he was good with any and all solids by about 11 months

Re: spinoff to what 9-10 month olds eat
I feel the same way. DS is 8 months and still on pureed fruits and veg and oatmeal. I want to start him on new foods, but I don't know where to start. I tried giving him a few fruits that were thicker and he gagged so bad. I have given him tiny pieces of puffs and he likes them. I guess we can start with soft potatoes and soft pieces of fruit?

Re: spinoff to what 9-10 month olds eat
I felt the same way and Michael has 3 teeth. But when we were out to dinner the other day and i had a plain sweet potato i put some on a spoon and gave it to him and he loved it, he kept opening his mouth for more. I just sit and watch very closely and go for it!!!
take it one day and one thing at a time. I have also given him a small piece of my pancake a week ago and he loved it as well.
we are going to worry about every little think they do all through their entire lives even when they are adults, but we have to try it!!!

Re: spinoff to what 9-10 month olds eat
DD would gag whenever I tried stage 3, but oddly enough - didn't gag when she fed herself some "chunkier" things.

Re: spinoff to what 9-10 month olds eat
I just started one day with puffs bc I knew that I had to expose DS to them. I was very surprised at how well he mashed food with his gums. Even now, I will try things & if it is something he has not had, I make sure I watch him carefully but he has never had any issues

Re: spinoff to what 9-10 month olds eat
I was terrified. I took a CPR & choking class which helped calm my nerves.
She was a gagger for a while with certain textures, but that hasnt happened in a while. Thank God!
I started with bananas, sweet potatoes.
Bake a sweet potato, she loves them. They have a thicker consistency, so they are a good starter food. DD has no interest in mashed potatoes.
I'm getting braver with each new meal.
Now at 9.5 months I no longer puree fruits, I cut them into little pieces.
He'll tell you what pace to go at

Im the same way. With My first I didnt start anything until 10 month. My second I started at 5.5 against the Dr which says nothing til 9 months. She is very conservative. Just wait til I go back for his 9 month check up and she saiys " ok now you can try puffs. And I'll say, oh he's already eating "steak and potatoes for dinner!

Re: spinoff to what 9-10 month olds eat
I was nervous, but my 8month old now eats everything he can pick up. He chews everything and won't swallow until he's comfortable. I gave him meatballs today (broken up) and he chewed and chewed until the meat was white! LOL Then he swallowed it. I guess our LOs know more than we do!
**Just be sure not to mix chunks in with purees so that they know to chew.
