Spinoff-Would you adopt a dog who has a history of aggression and have him around your kids?
I keep seeing people say-not only in this post but others-give the dog to a rescue, shelter etc. If a dog is vicious, how could you do that to another family? I don't get it...
ETA: I AM a dog lover and have two large dogs 8 and 5. They are both from the pound and are "mutts." I do not EVER leave them unattended with my children

Re: Spinoff-Would you adopt a dog who has a history of aggression and have him around your kids?
There is no way I could do that. It is heartbreaking to have to put an animal down, but if trainers and rescue organizations are saying they cannot take an animal I think it would be negligent to try to place him/her with another family.

Re: Spinoff-Would you adopt a dog who has a history of aggression and have him around your kids?
never, no way, no how
MOST times, dogs who have shown signs of aggression are put down because they are unadoptable
It is easy for everyone to say what they WOULD do but their dog did not try to attack their child

I am with you 100% on this, I love my dog, but my child's safety or the safety of other children is most important.

Re: Spinoff-Would you adopt a dog who has a history of aggression and have him around your kids?
no way. We are dog lovers and I couldn't. We have a 65lb pointer/lab mix. He is great and while we once had a little issue with food, we've been working hard and have noticed a great difference. But his demeanor is great. My parents had an aggressive mutt a few years back and they put him down. I understand peoples feelings, but if a dog is aggressive, then its kinda like passing a gun along to another person.

Re: Spinoff-Would you adopt a dog who has a history of aggression and have him around your kids?
NO WAY!! Certainly not a 130lb dog.
My DD has no fear and I have no doubt that she'd set a dog with aggressive tendencies right off. Not a risk I'm willing to take.

Re: Spinoff-Would you adopt a dog who has a history of aggression and have him around your kids?
No I would not ever adopt a dog that has shown agression around children.. Honestly I would not adopt it whether I had children or not.. And I love dogs !!! But if I already had this dog then decided to have children and all the sudden the dog showed aggression then I would hire a trainer and work with the dog. I also feel that those dogs are left to die in shelters becasue no one adopts aggressive dogs? Why would I if there are others that are not? its a terrible cycle.

Re: Spinoff-Would you adopt a dog who has a history of aggression and have him around your kids?
No I def would not.
We had to rehome our cat because she was very aggressive toward Kaydyn. The last straw was when Kaydyn walked past her on the couch and Maddii dug her claw into the back of Kaydyn's head and tried to bite her face.
Luckily Kaydyn was not hurt but we knew we could no longer keep her around. We lucked out and found an older woman with no kids to take her, but she was a 5lb cat, not a 100+ lb aggressive dog.
You just never know how they are going to react. She was perfectly fine before Kaydyn came along and then she just changed.

Re: Spinoff-Would you adopt a dog who has a history of aggression and have him around your kids?
I can't think of one reason why I would.
I do know that some shelters have restrictions on their adoptions - ie. no families.

Re: Spinoff-Would you adopt a dog who has a history of aggression and have him around your kids?
As much as I love dogs, I couldn't if I had children. I use to compete with my one dog in obedience before DD but now I have no time.
The only way I would if I knew I would never have children and I was ready to commit to training.

HELLLSSS to the effing no.
and I cannot believe that people would consider essentially FOISTING an aggressive dog on to another family.
sure, maybe you'll place it with a couple with no kids...but what about their neighbors kids...nieces and nephews, the friggin Girl Scout Cookie girl...
sorry, my dog, my onus.

Re: Spinoff-Would you adopt a dog who has a history of aggression and have him around your kids?
I would not adopt an aggresive dog especially now that I have a child BUT there are people out there that do not have kids and/or are better able to 'handle' or train dogs with aggression problems. So I wouldn't say that trying to adoot them out is bad or not right to do to another family - as long as everything is upfront with his issues.
When we adopted our black lab mix, two other families/couples were looking at her but as soon as they were told she has some skin issues - they gave her back so fast! My dh and I scooped her. The skin issues actually made us want to adopt her more bc we felt like no one would take her. Our other dog has the same issue so we were already educated and experienced with it. Not to say that a akin issue and agression is the same, but the idea is that what doesn't work for one family might be ok for someone else, ya know?
BUt I will say that my dd is the most important thing to me so I wouldnt want her around ANY dogs that even looked at her funny, lol.

Re: Spinoff-Would you adopt a dog who has a history of aggression and have him around your kids?
No I wouldn't personally because I do have a child. But rescue groups can find a right fit for a dog in a home that doesn't have children or pets if they don't get along with other animals.
I did some Volunteer rescue works for awhile with a pug group once I got Otis as a bridal shower gift from my Sil. I felt she gave me a gift and I needed to help other out.
We used to have to do home visit of potental homes for these dogs.

Re: Spinoff-Would you adopt a dog who has a history of aggression and have him around your kids?
No way. I have a cat and I get nervous with him around kids because he has claws. If an animal has a history of aggression then not to a family. I would specify that they would not make a good family dog. Maybe someone without children would be willing to adopt.

I'm not sure I understand this. How is surrendering an aggresive dog to a shelter/rescue putting another family in danger? It's up to the person who gives the dog away to let the shelter know why, and I don't think a shelter is going to give the dog to another family.
Who would purposely adopt a dog with a history of agressive behavior if they have a family?
