Spinoff: Would you rehome your pets if your DC is allergic to them?

this is a spinoff to my post about DD having rash on her body. I know it could be a number of things, but if it turns out that she's allergic to my dogs/cat, I would be so devastated! I can't rehome my pets, they are like my children, but now my priority is DD.
I don't know what I would do if this is the case Chat Icon

ABSOLUTELY!!! I would rehome my pets. What other option is there? To put them to sleep? That's cruelity in my book

I'd NEVER put them to sleep, wasn't even thinking about this!
There are lots of options, why would someone chose to put healthy animals to sleep?

As much as it would kill me I would give my furbaby to my parents or sister. I know both would take her in a heartbeat and she would be well cared for. I would do this for a severe allergy but not for runny nose/ watery eye kind. Mild I don't think I would.

We did. It broke my heart and I miss my cats dearly. Thankfully, my parents took them in and they are living the high life now.

My allergist recommended we rehome them rather than give Madelyn medication because she also has food allergies. Apparently, having food AND environmental allergies (which is what an allergy to dander is) puts her at a higher risk for developming anaphylaxis reactions. That wasn't a risk we were willing to take.

It would literally rip my heart out but yes, I would have to rehome my dog. I wouldnt feel comfortable giving my DC anti-allergy meds from birth...

I think at my daughters age (2), I would try allergy meds first

Re: Spinoff: Would you rehome your pets if your DC is allergic to them?

I just adopted a beautiful German Shepard for this exact reason. The previous owner's little girl was so allergic to the dog, they had no choice but to find her a new home. I feel so bad for the family as the dog was a true member of their family.
But I also know that the dog is very happy here too and my boys absolutely LOVE her.
Good luck!!Chat Icon

Re: Spinoff: Would you rehome your pets if your DC is allergic to them?

Absolutely!!

I know someone who was in this situation and did not rehome her pets - she kept them, even though her DD was allergic. It was okay for a few years, but eventually, her DD's asthma got so bad she needed to be hospitalized because the medication wasn't working since the child still lived with the animals. It's not a risk I would take.

I would think giving your DC medications, or letting them live with the allergies.

I'd try meds first (IF the child was old enough)
If not, my Mom or MIL would be more than willing to take my little beast -

i couldn't let a child suffer through animal allergies

medication? not saying that I would take this route, like I said in my original post, I don't know what I would do.
But I am sorry to say that if you were suggesting I would put them to sleep is very offensive.
DD is the my #1 priority, but I've also made a commitment to my pets. We'll just have to figure something out if we were ever face with this dilemma, but putting healthy animals to sleep is not an option and is murder in my book.

I would try allergy meds first. It would also depend on how severe the allergy was.

Re: Spinoff: Would you rehome your pets if your DC is allergic to them?

Depends on the allergy.
I am allergic to dogs and cats. Cats I get your typical reaction of coughing, sneezing etc. So I can’t have a cat.
Dog I have had my entire life and still do. I am allergic to the oil in my dogs skin. So if she goes to long between baths I can’t touch her w/o breaking into hives. But I can manage my allergy and understand it. My mom had the same allergy and my brother has a more minor one. Yet my mom was the one who brought home our first dog.
Also sometimes (only sometimes) you can develop an almost immunity to your own pet as your body adjusts to them. This is how I learned I had any allergy. My one dog I never had any issues then we got a new one and I was hive ridden.

I think I would try to keep my dog clean, in a separate space from DS’s play area, hire a cleaning person to help maintain any hair issues, and try the medication route (if DC is old enough) before opting to re home my dog.

Re: Spinoff: Would you rehome your pets if your DC is allergic to them?

I had a dog growing up and was highly allergic. I was never tested when I should have been. I suffered greatly. As much as I loved my dog, I would have rather have had a childhood of easy breathing. In addition, I have other severe environmental allergies.

If "re-homing" a pet yielded the same results as medicating my child, you can be damn sure I would re-home the pet before pumping my kid full of medication.

I don't think the previous poster is suggesting that YOU would put your pet down but it is a sad reality that many people do.
