Re: Spinoff: Would you rehome your pets if your DC is allergic to them?
For me the decision would be easy, without a doubt the pets would go. I would never give my child meds for an extended period of time if there was an alternative solution.

The pet would have to go. Sorry, that's just the way it is. People come first before animals in my book, my kid would not be on medication so that the pet could stay.

Re: Spinoff: Would you rehome your pets if your DC is allergic to them?
I would do a list of things before rehoming my pet. And the only home they would ever go to is my moms or my ILs. I had this discussion with my mom and my DH before we had DD. I made a committment to my pets that I take very seriously and would exhaust ALL options before rehoming them. They ARE my family members too and even my family and DHs family would never be ok with them leaving our family.

this is exactly how I feel. DD will always come first no matter what, but I want to be sure we have tried all reasonable alternative before rehoming the pets, even then they will probably go to my brother or other close family members.
Just wanted to add that we don't know what caused DD's rash, so I am just trying to think up a list of possibilities. Hopefully it is not the pets, and we will never have to make this decision.

What other options are there?
You can't rehome DC so the pets would have to go. It's sad but you really have no other choices.

its likely a soap or a detergent. I dont think pet allergies can show up this early on, for some reason I believe I read that it takes time for the child to develop a response to the dander.
Did she have the rash before her vaccines (didnt she get shots yesterday)? Or am I confusing you with someone else?

She did get her shots yesterday, good memory She has the rash since last week. At first I thought it's baby acne, but then it started to get patchy like eczema on her legs. Her face is much better, just a bit dry. She also has tiny red dots and rough skin on her belly.. but arms and back are totally clear and smooth. I've been exhausting myself trying to think what could of cause this, it's so frustrating and emotionally draining, I feel like such a failure for letting this happen to my baby

I would try every other avenue first and then depending on how bad it was i would make a decision.... i would be aiming to keep the pets because allergies are often outgrown and pets reduce allergies in children.

You didn't let this happen. Things happen. What kind of detergent are you using?

Dreft for DD, I run her load twice with warm water, to make sure all detergent is rinsed clean before drying. We use Era for our clothes, but starting today, we will be using Tide Free & Clear.

Why dont you try All free and clear for DD? Thats what we use. Maybe the dreft isnt agreeing with her.

I don't have pets.... but if I did, I would think I would have to. I would def try to get family members of friends to take them in so I could still visit. Good luck!

Re: Spinoff: Would you rehome your pets if your DC is allergic to them?
I don't know, I'm skeptical...
I am highly, highly allergic to cats. I found this out when I went away to college and came back for October break. I had had cats my entire life and it never bothered me. When I came back from school, all of a sudden I was sneezing, coughing and could barely catch my breath. I was allergy-tested, and lo and behold!
If DD had a serious reaction and it was obvious that the cats were causing it (we have 4 cats), I would of course rehome them. DD does sneeze every now and again, but it doesn't seem to bother her very much.
And I'd like to add, as I'm sitting here (highly allergic to cats), one of my cats is curled up on the bed next to me

same here... i'd probably check with family and friends first to see if any of them were willing to take the pet first

Re: Spinoff: Would you rehome your pets if your DC is allergic to them?
i think everyone is quick to say they would rehome their pets and not put kids on meds etc, but if you had pets all your life, they were your first kids, the first creatures you cared for and that care and love for you unconditionally.
I dont think if you are a petlover it is such an easy without a doubt as many of you have put it choice. Thats crap.
Addtionally it is a good thing to have pets in the house. Children benefit greatly from learning to care for things smaller then themselves and from learning to be nice and grateful to the companionship of an animal.
This is a tough choice, not a no brainer where the pets go and nothing else to even think about.
I have 2 cats and i would TRY everything first to make sure i could keep them not just becuase i want my cats to stay with me but because i want my daughter to enjoy the benefits of having a pet which are huge.
