Re: Spinoff...are you a food snob
I'm not a chain fan. I would rather go to a diner to sit with friends and chat if I want to do something casual.
I think living in Manhattan did that to me.

Re: Spinoff...are you a food snob
I am definately a food snob when it comes to Italian food...I grew up with home cooked meals - we RARELY went out to eat - and if we did it was because it was a party - like a communion or a baptism...and even then it was a family friends resturant who closed the place down for us and cooked just like my mom...
To me Olive Garden is not considered Italian food...I ate there once because DH's stepmom made reservations to a nice "Italian resturant" while visiting them in Florida...it was the first and last time i ate there...but I have freinds who love this place - so to each its own

Re: Spinoff...are you a food snob
I have become a food snob in the past 2 years because my DH is in the "restaurant" business. I have been brought into an entirely different world now. With DH, we get invited to events held at some of the finest places in NYC. We rarely go to a chain restaurant unless it is last minute or a diner. For me, going out is not going to TGIF's for dinner & enjoying it. That is something I did when I didn't know any better.

Re: Spinoff...are you a food snob
I think I am. I don't eat fast food unless it is a last resort- I don't enjoy chain restaurants-I will go to them with groups if that's what people want to do-but if I am going out to eat I would never choose Applebees, TGIFridays, Ruby Tuesdays..etc. I just don't like it enough. Olive Garden-not fine italian cuisine... I would rather spend a little more money for much better food elsewhere, I also like trying new places...Good Food is important to me

But I don't think I could ever live in the middle of nowhere, where your only choices are olive garden, applebees or fridays! I would never go out to dinner!
OMG this is so true... DHs parents live a small town upstate and thats is all there is up there... we go up there about once every three months or so and we always eat at friendly's.... there are no "real" restaurants there. I can't imagine them even wanting to try somethng different, like say thai for example.

I am reading all of the raves about the Cheesecake Factory food and I have to say, I am blown away.
the food may be tasty...but I would never catergorize ANY chain restaurant food as "great" .
I completely and totally agree.
Especially if you live on Long Island or the NYC area. There are soooooo many wonderful private restaurants to choose from that eating at a "box restaurant" is almost blasphemy to me.
I don't eat at any of those restaurants unless someone else practically forces me to go...I don't like them at all.
And, the price argument is moot, cuz you will spend just as much at one of these chains as you would at any other restaurant.

I would say we are both food snobs, we enjoy eating out at fine private establishments. but i enjoy eating at chains like grand luxe, or cheesecake and even crackerbarrel. lol i just know what to order at the chains so i wont be disappointed, and i wont compare it to the better quality restaurants

Re: Spinoff...are you a food snob
I was a borderline food snob- until I married my husband and became full blown. We never eat in chain restaurants as a family, because I can't stand to look at his disapproving face throughout the meal. My kids understand that daddy doesn't do Friendly's but will take them for pastry and gelato, Ben and Jerry's or a real ice cream parlor, at the drop of a hat. Consequently, my kids eat everything from Thai, to sushi and Greek. In fact, every Saturday he takes them out for sushi for lunch. They never ask daddy for fast food or a chain restaurant, but do go with me and friends sometimes for lunch.
I have to say I must be in the minority as well because I don't love cheesecake Factory either, I think its ok- but I wouldn't go out of my way to eat there. I do occasionally take my kids, if my husband is away, because they love cheesecake.

Re: Spinoff...are you a food snob
No, but I know what you mean... If I'm thinking that I want a "great" meal I probably wouldn't think of a chain restaurant first.
BUT...Cheesecake Factory is another story...yummm... I've been in mood for it ever since I saw that thread!

I think THAT is one of the biggest reasons why people go to these places. If you have no where else to go, other than a local diner, then Applebees seems like a mecca to you! The chain places are everywhere, they advertise everywhere and they're easy in n out. They even do drive-thru now. But that should tell you something about the quality. They're all the same anyway. Most of them get their food/ingredients from the same suppliers so don't be fooled by fancy advertising.

Re: Spinoff...are you a food snob
I don't really think I'm a food snob but there are some places that I won't set foot in. We ate at Olive Garden once and it was absolutely vile - I'll NEVER go there again!
Where I live, I'd have to go out of my way to find a chain restaurant. I have some of the best restaurants in Brooklyn within walking distance of my apartment, so in my case the good stuff also happens to be more convenient.

Re: Spinoff...are you a food snob
I like food, period. I can be happy eating in Fridays or The Olive Garden, but I also like really good restaurants. However, I don't like very fancy foods..I'm a simple food person, so if the place is too fancy, i'm not likely to find anything that I like.

Re: Spinoff...are you a food snob
I must be a food snob, because I agree with the OP! Chain restaurants do nothing for me. I do like going to Chili's and places like that because they are kid friendly and I have a 1 and 3 year old! But if DH and I get a night to go out to eat, you bet your bottom dollar its going to be a good restaurant and probably big $$.

Re: Spinoff...are you a food snob
I am a total food snob... I don't even want to post as to what some of the dinners I have gone out for have cost! But it does not always come down to price.
I agree-- I do not like chains and will only eat at them as a last resort. IMO, Tyler Florence SOLD OUT for creating an Applebees menu.
While some of the chain food may be good-- I think that there is a difference in the overall quality and artistic nature of the food. And, the calories alone in some of those dishes-- OMG.
ETA-- Also, when you go out to eat, you are also paying for the experience and ambiance-- and chains usually do not give much in that area.
But don't get me wrong-- I love me some onion rings and mozz sticks from time to time... but I don't need them to have bacon wrapped around them and dip them in to ranch dressing and sweet and sour nice to make them edible! Well, I am a vegetarian too.
edited for typos.

Re: Spinoff...are you a food snob
OMG So NOT a food snob here.
We usually go to chain restaurants and to me, that is a fun night out. We have been to "nicer" restaurants but its not our thing. I was raised to be extremely simple! We didnt have much money so going to a couple of chicken nuggets every once in a while became a big thing to me.
When I got married, its just the way I stayed. I was in tears recently because Ground Round in Roslyn closed and it was my favorite place ever!
Funny..our first date, my dh took me to a fancy steakhouse in NJ..we went in and was waiting for a table and I told him I wanted to leave. We wound up in a diner eatching cheeseburgers and shakes. Its just what I prefer. Although I am a VERY PICKY EATER..so I surprise myself.

Re: Spinoff...are you a food snob
Absolutely I'm a food snob. And a coffee snob too. Whenever I go home to visit my parents, I have to go out and buy coffee because I can't stand the crap that they buy.
I hate Subway and other "deli" chains; I dislike most chain restaurants except for maybe the Outback.

Re: Spinoff...are you a food snob
DH made me into one. On one of our first dates he took me to a dinner that cost the both of us about $100. Being the youngest of 6 children, I never had anything like that before so I was in awe. So to me, pre-DH, Cheesecake factory may have been god back then, but now, no way in hell.
