Re: spinoff...should a child's lateness to school be held against them.

I think it all comes down to responsibility and accountability..for both the student and the parents. I do think it should be noted and if it's part of the admissions criteria for high school - and every applicant is subject to review on attendance - then no exception should be made.
I am sure she is not the first nor the last to be rejected based on poor attendance/excessive tardiness. It's unfortunate and her parents really need to figure out a better way to handle this problem.
Again...I don't want to come across harsh...I feel for her and assume that this is a HUGE disappointment.

Re: spinoff...should a child's lateness to school be held against them.
Is it a NYC Public School? If so her guidance counselor probably warned the kids in the 6th grade (assuming this is a MS).
I am a GC in a middle school and I tell the students (and parents--whose fault it usually is that the kid is late) that the HS's will look at 7th grade: grades ELA/Math scores Abs/lateness
Many of my student do not get into HS programs based on attendance. Lateness is really deterimental.
Schools recieve part of their rating based on attendance. As a result Principals will not admit students that are absent or late a lot bc it hurts their school rating.
ETA: I read through some of the thread. It is important to note that the Specialized School (Stuy, Bronx etc. there are 7) DO NOT look at attendance /lateness or grades or state exams THEY ONLY look at the SHSAT, so your niece might be in luck if she wants one of those schools. All other public/catholic programs DO look at everything. I would imagine many Catholic schools would still admit her, esp w/an interview. Public, for the top programs eh it won't happen w/too many lateness (again other than Spec HS)

Their school records follow them all thru life, so even when it comes time for certain jobs, their records from all years of school are looked at.
\
Who looks at middles school records? This is a little overboard.

When I worked for NYC BOE, I hd requests for elementary ttendance records, just not something tht I guess schoold advertise.
But I know from experience, they are requested. \
Who the hell cares how a kid did in middle school, except for the high school they are going too next.

Everyone will have their own opinions, I was just stating what we were told by the NYC BOE. Children belong in school and not on vaction.
I have had request from agencies for school records for employment. So I know that this is true.
It is your child do what you feel best, I ws just stating a fact nd answering Ophelia's post.
Teachers also do not have to give the work they will miss while on vacation, so the child falls behind.
If "angencies" are getting involved, this leads me to believe that it is a job placement program for troubled students or students with special needs...When a typical 18 year old goes to Walmart or the local restuarant to get their 1st job, they are not requesting school attendance records. Once you graduate college and go for a career...those potential employers are also not requesting attendance records.
The point I was trying to make in previous posts was about LI school districts, not the NYC BOE...I can see them being stricter in the city since they can't get kids to go to school in some areas, and the parents just dont care...there are also schools in the city where the kids would be safer on the street than in the actual school building...
