(SPR) - Any Vegans out there?
Since I'm trying to restrict my diet as far as dairy, wheats and other such nonsense... i figured I'd reach out to the experts and see just what you eat!
Any suggestions, or help on what you substitute with would be greatly appreciated.

Re: (SPR) - Any Vegans out there?
Can you eat fish? I'm basically vegan except I eat fish and eggs.
We buy a lot of morningstar and trader Joe's products - Veggie patch makes awesome fake meatballs, so does trader joes. Morningstar makes awesome fake sausage, chicken nuggets, chicken patties and a variety of veggie burgers.
We also eat 2-3 servings of fish a week -mostly tilapia, salmon and trout. And, quite a bit of soy and tofu. For dairy, we buy silk soy yogurt, silk soymilk, soy cheese, etc.
Let me know if you have any more questions - I've been doing this for almost 4 years now.

Re: (SPR) - Any Vegans out there?
Thanks!! Yes, I can eat fish. I'm basically trying to cut out all dairy, but don't have a Trader Joes close by. I was just wondering what are the best brands to look out for as far as NO-dairy. We have a small organic section at our local supermarket, so it's a bit limited. Trying to stay away from soy too because I've been told that's a pretty big food allergy for babies too. So I've been drinking Rice Milk.
Is there a non dairy substitute for eggs?

Egg are not a diary food, they are only found in the dairy aisle.
I eliminated dairy from my diet and while it was hard it was not impossible.
I drank soy milk, never tried rice milk although I heard it is very good.
At least you can eat meat and fish, I am a vgetarian and didn't eat those.
They make a fake mayonaise so you can eat eggsalad and tuna salad for lunch.
Go Lean makes a vegan waffle that are very good.
Is there a whole foods or a local health store anround near you, I had the best luck at a local store, since Trader Joes had a lot of vegetarian items but alot of them still had diary products in them
Good Luck, when I think of some more things I will update my post.

Yes, there is, but I forget what it's called! Though like the OP said, eggs aren't technically dairy so they shouldn't cause a reaction. Go to Whole Foods or a local health food market and they should help you out. The products we like best are tofutti, veggie patch, morningstar and silk. Most major supermarkets now carry a slew of non-dairy products - just ask one of the workers and they can direct you to them (they can be hidden).

So eggs are not a dairy product? I can eat them without worrying it's bothering my breast milk?
Oh thank heaven!

Ask Liza but I don't think eggs are "allowed" in a vegan diet. It's an animal product.

I have been drinking Rice Dream, since I was warned against eating too much soy. I like the morningstar brand frozens: veggie bites, veggie & soy bacon, veggie burgers, etc.

I'm just wondering if they're considered "dairy".

Eggs are not dairy. I think what you mean by dairy is milk products. My DS is allergic to milk/dairy. When I was BFing I had to eliminate dairy from my diet and now I have to be very careful that my DS doesn't eat anything with dairy in it. The things you want to look out for are milk, butter, cheese, cream, yogurt, sour cream, etc. Also when checking ingredient labels watch out for whey and cassein as they are dairy products too. You should be fine eating eggs as long as your baby doesn't also have an egg allergy.

Another vegan here. There are some great non-dairy margarines on the market these days. I like Earth Balance and have also used Soy Garden. They taste buttery and work well in baking, too. They are clearly marked "vegan" and "non-dairy."
Also, a lot of processed/pre-packaged foods are starting to list dairy at the end of the ingredients, because it is such a popular allergen. So look at the end of the list and in bold it will usually say "Contains dairy, wheat, soy, nuts, etc.," so that's a good guide.
If you have any specific questions, feel free to FM me. I've been vegan for a few years (although not as long as Liza) and eat A LOT.
