lori - i had a problem 'similar' to this about 10 or so years ago and found a headache specialist in PA. I went so far as to have numbing agent inserted into my nose - into my brain...which did wind up helping......
oh Lori, I am so sorry to read this. Your poor father and I can only imagine what it must be like for you and your family to watch him in this agony and not be able to help.
Lori I am so sorry to hear about your dad. My thoughts & prayers are with him.
Maybe he should look into acupuncture or some other alternative medicine. I don't have any first hand experience, but I know of some people who had great success with these types of treatments.
I am so sorry Lori! :( My younger brother suffers from this and there is some research that there might be some triggers that can start them. Seasonality, certain foods and even temp changes can bring the onset of one. I will ask my bro for more info and pass it on.

Has he always suffered from them? My dad gets headaches sometimes, but this winter he had severe headaches - also had to go to the ER on Christmas. They lasted for a couple of weeks. He hasn't had them since (knock on wood)
