illegal but he probably has issues w/ his other workers. Chat Icon Chat Icon

And you're probably right-but this isn't her problem. That's no reason not to give her a job.

Im totally going to get flamed here but.. as an employer who interviews and hires employees..Having small children plays a part in my decision of hiring that person.

Im a FTWM and I know it's HORRIBLE but putting on the manager hat.. it does play a part.. HOWEVER I would NEVER let that be the ONLY reason not to hire someone and I would NEVER tell them that was the reason.Chat Icon

How did he know you have a child?

I've never asked about that when interviewing people because I thought the law kept you from asking about marital or kid status.

yeah I'm curious too.

Honestly I never mention her Chat Icon what I do or don't do in my private time does not affect my job. I have daycare and other stuff lined up and I will use my sick/vacation days if I need to for her but I don't let her affect my job (often Chat Icon or only that I'm on LIF Chat Icon )

I never mention mine either. Especially the fact that I have twins. people are morons. Even if you don;t sue you can make a complaint with the NYS Dept of Labor. He should not be allowed to do that dumbazzz

I would file a complaint with the dept. of labor b/c thats total BS and discriminatory. I would bust his balls over it even though you didnt get hired.

That may very well be the reason why you didn't get the job but I cannot believe he actually said that to you! Unbelievable!

Exactly - Can we say HR NIGHTMARE ????

Really? It's never entered my mind when hiring someone. Then again I hired someone who was pregnant.

My feeling is if you can do your job well & don't expect special treatment because you are a parent, then it's none of my business if you have kids or not.

From my experience most moms use up their vacation & personal days for their kids & they are less likely to change jobs once they are secure (try hiring someone straight out of college, likely you'll be training someone new within 2 years).

I guess it depends on personal experience. I have two units I hire for.. one of which is customer service.. It is imperative that I have a full staff to handle the call volume. I've had moms who are consistantly late AND not OR AND have exhausted their time.Chat Icon and you never know if they are responsible at the interview..so I know not every mom is like that.. Im not.. but it's a risk.

Exactly!
Those issues are with his employees, not me. Their inability to juggle home life and work life (not that having to leave work to tend to your child shows you can't work and be a parent) should not reflect poorly on me. My being a parent has no bearing on how I am as an employee. I was perfect for this position (not to pat myself on the back or anything Chat Icon)... we had experience with the same companies and people and he was impressed with my background - his words, not mine. He had no idea what kind of support system my DH and I have outside of daycare and it was wrong to ASSume that I would be unreliable.

For God's sake, at least LIE to me about why you don't want to hire me Chat Icon

But how would you feel if you were told that you weren't getting the job simply because you have a child? It's wrong.

You run the same risk hiring a mom as you do anyone else. You can have someone come into an interview all buttoned up and clean, but when they go home, they are a raging alcoholic or drug addict. You just hired the drug addict over the mother because you thought the mom wasn't going to be reliable. It's a crapshoot no matter who the person is out of the office and at home.

It completely sucks that he said it to you he should of just lied. I do have to agree with the fact having young children does interfere with work (NOT FOR everyone and not all the time) but you are more stable and likely to stay with the company is a perk any parents has to offer.

I wish my coworkers were responsible and not abuse the kid policy. The winters are nightmares for staffing and i have to pull double duty to help out as much to compensate. It is rather aggravating to also be the only one to have to show up at work on time daily since i don't have to drop the kids off at a bus stop or leave early to pick them up.

I agree - i understand where you are coming from. You need people to show up to work and perform. However, at my job, most of the absent employees are men - alot of them have health problems, some call in sick, etc. The women, including me, very rarely take vacation, work harder, rarely take sick days/drs.appts b/c of fear of what this poster posted - that we are looked down upon b/c we had children. I think it would be a very sad environment if women with children were not part of the work force - who would want a work force like that? I think the original poster should file a complaint.

Wow Kim, I'm disgusted. I'm so angry right now.
I'd at least get somethig on file. Even though it's a phone call.

Honestly, given that info I wouldn't want to work for those people anyway. Chat Icon
