SPR: WWYD?

We are in contract for the sale of our coop and should be closing in October. We want to buy a house but have not yet found anything we like. If we don't find anything in the next few weeks, we are going to rent an apartment until we find a house.

Our dilemma is where to rent the apartment. Our original plan was to sublet a furnished apartment in Manhattan because we love Manhattan and are sad to move to the suburbs, its close to my doctor, and I would have a nice easy commute during the end of my pregnancy.

The downside is that if we don't have a house by February when the baby is due, we will have less help from family if we are in Manhattan. My family is on Long Island so while they will still come by to help, it is just more difficult. Plus, my mom is my daycare when I go back to work in May.

The other option is renting on LI close to where we are buying a house (western Nassau). The upside is that it will be easier for us to look for a house, we will become more accustomed to the area we are buying a house, and we will have plenty of help. I would change my doctor if we moved so I would deliver on LI. I also should add that my family is NOT the type to come over unannounced every day when I am first home, but they definitey will come over as needed so I can either nap or run an errand! The downside is that I will have a more difficult commute and that it isn't Manhattan.

I also want to add that money is not a deciding factor for us, though we know an apartment on LI is cheaper.

What would you prefer? An easy commute at the end of your pregnancy and your last hurrah in Manhattan before moving to the suburbs or more help from family when the baby is born but a more difficult commute?

I don't commute, so I can't really weigh the options of that....however, I would do the apartment on LI.

I feel like at the end of your pregnancy how great will the last hurrah be anyways, and by already being out on the island, it will make the future move with the baby and all of his/her stuff easier when the time does come to move into your future house.

Re: SPR: WWYD?

I never had that urge to live in Manhattan so i'd go with LI.

I know DH doesn't want to hear this (LOL) but I think LI would be better. It would be easier for you to move when you find a house - which will be either while even more pg or with an infant, and I would try to make that as easy as possible. Plus DH would get used to living out here. I know its tempting to go to the City though!

We moved out of Manhattan when I was 25 weeks pregnant. I wanted to be closer to my family which is in long Island. I switched my doctor too. It was harder for DH because he was born and raised there, personally, I had had enough of Manhattan. If I were you I would get an apartment on LI and get to know the area better of where you are planning on buying a house. It will make the transition easier for you.

Re: SPR: WWYD?

DH and I own a place in Manhattan and have no intentions on moving to LI in the near future (although I grew up there and do see us there 5 years down the road). That being said, I feel like you should get the place on LI. I think it will be easier for you to look for home and become more familiar with your area. Good luck!!

Re: SPR: WWYD?

This is a very tough call. How long would your commute actually be? If it is not too bad I would prob look for something on LI, just sounds like a better long term plan. Also, if you do find a house you will have that commute anyway. You also mentioned the option of changing your doc so you could deliver on LI, so that would eliminate the commute..right???
