Stages of Separation Anxiety - the BTDT take

Since a lot of you are posting about Separation Anxiety, I thought I'd give you my take on what I've seen for Separation Anxiety in the under 3 years old.

0-6 months - none, I love mommy! there she is...oh look a new toy...I love anyone who is going to smile at me. But if you are too loud or look strange, I'll cry so hard people will question whether or not you're a good person.

6-9 months - I love mommy! Mommy exists always...Oh look a new toy...Mommy walked out of the room. Oh my god! There is no more mommy left! I need mommy! There's a toy, but where is Mommy? Scream, warn everyone Mommy has been kidnapped! There she is!

9-12 months - I love Mommy! Mommy exists always. Mommy is talking to a stranger. They want to hold me. No, no, no. I want to look at you from Mommy's arms. Go away stranger!

12-18 months - I love Mommy! Mommy exists always. Look, I can walk. I can walk away from Mommy! Mommy, I walked too far from you. Holy crap, what if I can't get back to Mommy!? Scream, cry try anything. When I cry, she'll come to me. Waaaah! Mommy? MOMMY! Look here she comes. Let me try that again.

18-24 months - I'm ok. I can walk. Mommy can walk. All is good.

2-3 years old - I can walk. Mommy can walk. Hmm..there's a stranger. Let's ask Mommy about the stranger. "Mommy, if a stranger takes me, will I have to live with him forever? Mommy why are you breathing funny?" "What does hyperventalating mean?"

* All above stages can be interrupted by illnesses where I NEED Mommy all of the time.

Although I am only at the second stage the 6-9 I was laughing my *** off at this description as I can just imagine the stages to come......

Although I love that DD thinks the world begins and ends with me for now it can be frusrtrating at times..I had to brush me teeth in our room last night as she screamed her had off at her daddy when I left the room.....

You always seem to hit the nail on the head....are you sure you dont have more than two kidsChat Icon

Thats cute, Noah is the exact opposite of what he should be! When we go anywhere, once he is let loose its Mommy who? I have a mommy? I only remember her if I get hurt or I am tired!

Remind me that I said this when I take him to nursery tomorrow to start the settling in process....

Re: Stages of Separation Anxiety - the BTDT take

I am in the 6-9 month category and it couldn't be more true! Although its hard to leave him anywhere - or even go to the bathroom, the laughing, jumping up and down, reaching for me and biting my face (I think he is trying to kiss me) when I get back to him is priceless.
