Stance on healthcare?
I am all for a universal, publicly funded healthcare system. Big pharma and the healthcare systems (stony brook vs northwell) are all about money. It's not about what's best for the patient anymore. Why do you think people are so against a public health system?

Re: Stance on healthcare?
I think people are so against it because of the money factor.
I am all for a universal public healthcare system, but it doesn’t always work. I know the NHS is having problems, but I hear Canada is doing well.
Here health insurance is mandatory. The only problem where is gets difficult is if you are a freelance worker, which I am. I’m not going to get into long details, but I will say that if a freelancer cannot meet the requirements for this, you will not go broke, or die because you are broke, if you have a serious medical condition that requires hospitalization. You may not get the best and quickest treatment, but it is there as an option. You may have a problem with missed previous payments before that illness, but you will not be charged anything more for expensive hospital care. I have mixed opinions on this healthcare here, but the previous fact makes it all worth it. It’s never going to be perfect, but it’s something.

I’m for universal.
I think people are against it because they read once that someone in Canada had to wait for an appointment.
A bunch of other countries do it successfully. We could too.
Politicians (some) don’t want it because many take money from big pharma.

I actually can’t stand anything with government involvement. Had a HUGE medical bill from stonybrook and they refused to help financially or budge because of our “income”.
Meanwhile, had a large bill from a north well hospital and they gave me a discounted price and negotiated with us. And they were super easy to deal with.
I sometimes say me and my husband should just get divorced on paper and reap the benefits of the government since everything is so one size fits all and doesn’t take any other factors into play.

Re: Stance on healthcare?
I think all should have access to competent, sound medical care. I do not think that health insurance is the answer. Insurance, as I see it, is a tool to mitigate peril. I believe that insurance and health care are not one in the same. To provide health care for all...you need to start with health care and the availability of it not with health care insurance. After the ACA, health care companies had record earnings. The biggest ones are publically traded companies...they answer to share holders; the the patients.

How did Stony Brook know your income? I’ve helped a few family members reduce medical bills by thousands and never once was asked their income. For the future, just as a helpful tip, the first thing to do is ask for an itemized Bill of each charge. It’s a pain going back and forth in letters, but usually it gets greatly reduced.

That is crap. I had a huge bill from Stony Brook for my c section. They wanted me to pay a certain amount monthly which I could not afford so they sent it to a collection agency. When I called the collector they had no record of mn name or account number. The bill just disappeared into thin air??. I really think they just write this stuff off...

First question they asked me lol and when I told them our income and number of people in our house she said “sorry we can’t help you but can put you on a payment plan”. So I called a couple days later and lied and they sent me an application and it asks your income and number of people in your house and you have to sign it stating all the info is true. I don’t mess around with lying on things I sign so I just went on a payment plan and paid hundreds a month for an emergency room visit thanks to my crappy high deductible insurance.

Re: Stance on healthcare?
This pandemic has helped reveal lots of self absorbed, entitled jerks. But if it also hasn't made them realize that they're only as safe as the least safe member of society when infectious diseases are spreading and the need for healthcare for all, then I don't know what will.

You can actually apply to get a discount at Stony Brook. Your income has to be under a certain amount. I don’t know at the moment what that is but we applied and was accepted and paid half of the bill and it was good for a year. We would have to reapply now to see if we still qualify god forbid something happens again.

Stance on healthcare?
I feel like applying for a discount is a trap of sorts. Once you ask for the itemized bill, it’s easier to dispute. One parent was charged over $600 for a bandaid on his kid’s finger! Crazy stuff. There are some great sites out there that will explain how to do it step by step.

My bill was cut in half so I was happy with that :)
