I think it's a right that we all need to take responsibility for.

it's a human right... i'm sorry, people shouldn't be turned away from good care because they can't afford it. There is just too much wealth in this country

Re: Spin-off from the Debate: Do you believe that Healthcare is a Right or a Responsibility?
I want to say it is a right, but I am thinking of other "rights" that Americans have, and I think the difference is that the right to health care, unlike other rights, needs to be funded somehow. It costs government money and ultimately is a taxpayer burden.

Where does that money come from then?

OK you may have a point except I don't understand - what kind of services to take care of the sick?

Like the ER visits for the dude that has diabetes, but doesn't have health insurance, so he can't control his blood sugar levels, so he has to take himself to the ER instead of just monitoring his blood sugar and taking insulin.
Or families that have children w/ asthma- who don't have coverage and cannot afford visits to control the asthma, so have to take their kid to the ER to deal w/ major attacks.
Or people that just get the flu- and don't have health insurance and go to the ER b/c they have to treat them.

This question annoyed me because everyone in the U.S. DOES have the right to healthcare. No emergency room will turn anyone away.

Re: Spin-off from the Debate: Do you believe that Healthcare is a Right or a Responsibility?
I think healthcare is a right. Just like the fire department comes to put out the fire if your house is burning down regardless of your ability to pay or your immigration status. I think we all need to contribute, unfortunately via taxes, and yes, that means that the wealthy contribute more towards caring for the poorest among us.
That, to me, is the measure of a society- how it cares for its weakest members.

well then I guess I am a bit ignorant about this issue as I was unaware that you can get treated at the ER and have the government pay for it...really?

no, you will personally pay for it
back when my DH was young- and had no health coverage
he went to the ER
it cost $13K
the government didn't pick up the tab for that

Exactly.
Making it cheaper and available in the very beginning is a solid investment for our future.

No, then it is their responsibility to pay it. I do not think that FREE healthcare is a right. But they will be treated.
