I heard parts of it on the news this morning, sounds ridiculous and nothing like the true national anthem, the words are different. For once I agree with our president when he said this morning on the news it was written in English and people should learn to sing it in English!!Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon 1 point for Bush!!Chat Icon

Re: 'Star-Spangled Banner' in Spanish Draws Criticism----What Do You Think?

My grandparents, who were immigrants from Europe, came here and learned how to speak English. They knew by coming to this country, that they would have to make changes and assimilate in many aspects of their lives. LANGUAGE was one of them. They were STILL able to celebrate their culture, as they saw fit, with their family and friends privately.

In order to graduate high school, I was required to take a foreign language. In order to get my teaching licenses, I had to have credits in foreign language. If I have to learn another language to exist in the country I was born, why can't someone from another country learn a language of a country they wish so desperately to be a citizen? Times have changed.

When my family came here, it was an honor to be a citizen. They did what they needed to do to and what the country asked them to. Now the country is expected to make accommodations? Im not digging it.

I don't see how the country is making accommodations Chat Icon Chat Icon

By people writing a "Spanish" version of the song. IMO that does not mean the country is making accommodations.

I agree, you live in a country where the national language is English learn the language or make an effort to learn certain things like the national anthem in English.

Perhaps I chose the wrong words. The song was not sanctioned by the government to be sung in Spanish. However I still feel the same about everything else.

Very good points. I'm first generation American and agree. As a national anthem it sound be sung in the language it was written in and like our flag, because it is a symbol, should not be open to interrpretation. Changing the song in any way is interpretation.

But are any songs sanctioned by the Government? G*d if that was the case I'd rather be deaf. Chat Icon

I agree with what you are saying, but again IMO it's a free country.

I wish I knew what all the lyrics state. I don't think the anthem should be picked & dissected to leave out or put in other words.

I do see it as making accommodations... in a way. They write it (or a version of it) in Spanish for the people who want an anthem but can not speak the language the song has been sung in since it was written. To me it says, "ok, here you go, don't learn english we will do this for you." Just like we are making accommodations... press 2 for English...

But the governemnt is not the one making it. If I'm not mistaken the one who decided to do it is a British songwritter or something. The ones who are participating are American citizens who are doing it for whatever reason.

Spanish is the 2nd most spoken language in the world. It's actually 1 for English and 2 for Spanish. This allows for many businesses who have diverse clients who contribute to the economy(like my parents) to be able to continue doing business with these American companies.

I suppose it could be worse. George Bush could be singing it.

I said "sanctioned" because it apparently has been chosen by someone somewhere to represent us and it supposedly has rules. Chat Icon

yes represent US. The CITIZENS of the united states...

of which has become a melting pot...

With many languages, ethnicities and backgrounds....

So if they want to sing it in a different language...to show the love that they have for this wonderful country...

who cares...

the fact that illegal immigrants are using it....

is pathetic..

I thnk although its a free country is an AMERICAN free country..

It should be sung only in English.. If I went to an event and had to sit and listen to my OWN anthem in another language something would be very wrong...

ok...exactly why? Why is it "necessary" for this? \

It isn't like they are singing it at national events....or anything...

so why do people really care what language it is sung?

I think people are making too many assumptions. I seriously doubt that we would be attending a baseball game and sit out because our national anthem is being sung in another language.

There is no way in he!! this is going to happen. We have had no woman president yet...and now a Spanish sung anthem. Never going to happen.

Re: 'Star-Spangled Banner' in Spanish Draws Criticism----What Do You Think?

I am curious to know that IF the anthem is recorded or performed against the "rules" of interpretation (or whatever they call it) what exactly happens to the composer or writer or performer? Is there a fine? Jail time? Just curious. Not looking to ruffle feathers.
