starting holiday traditions with dc?
So my DD is the first grandchild on both sides. My DH's family already seems to have a lot of traditions that they never let go of. Growing up we didn't have too many traditions, we just all got together to celebrate holidays and saw a lot more of eachother than we do now. My mom is feeling sad because she thinks she is the "boring grandma" and our family is "boring" because we don't have any traditions. I felt bad about this and said that maybe we should start some. Can you share your family traditions, that include grandparents and/or aunts/uncles?? need some ideas to start in our family! TIA!

Re: starting holiday traditions with dc?
going to hicks.....
maybe hiding candy canes around house and see who can find the most.. candy cane hunt.... or some red and green lil containers w coins in them (instead of candy canes) sorta like an easter egg hunt...
christmas caroling to other relatives/friends house w little candle lanterns and baked good or candy canes to hand out to relatives.
i think bethpage restoration has a fun holiday event...
drive bys of nice xmas light displays..
christmas tree lighting of town and / or adjacent towns
church xmas boutiques

Re: starting holiday traditions with dc?
DH and I live near no family for right now.
We are starting an ornament tradition. We are buying her an ornament from us every year.
We also buy a card that we write in. Regardless of the fact that she can not read it. We are saving them so she can have them for future reading and hopefully enjoyment.
We are buying her a book for every holiday that is holiday themed. Again, this is more for the future and to help her collection.
We purchased a stocking and will fill it with socks and other goodies that we can use now and as the years pass we will update what we fill it with.
And our picture Christmas card.

Re: starting holiday traditions with dc?
DH's family also has no holiday traditions at all. For my side we all gtg christmas eve for a very festive evening of dinner, music, presents and desert.
At home we are beginning:
Open 1 gift from Mommy & Daddy on Christmas eve from the stockings. I loved doing this as a kid and usually got something cool to wear to church that night (like my first pair of high heels, first make up kits, those kind of things)
Baking santas cookies together after lunch on christmas eve
Decorating the tree with christmas music playing and the video camera capturing the fun (Victoria got to put up 90% of the ornaments and the star on top of the tree while Julianne was held by Mommy or Daddy)
We paint christmas ornaments for our family members to hang on their trees (even if they don't hang them, it keeps Victoria busy for hours!)
Watching a christmas movie as a family with hot chocolate and cookies
We have 3 books about christmas and santa, we alternate 1 book into our bedtime routine for both girls
Hanging the christmas cards we receive together so she actually sees everyones cards (even if she doesn't know who they are)
And I think I'm stealing the candy cane idea!!!

Re: starting holiday traditions with dc?
every year my family would get together around the tree to decorate together(put on christmas music realy get into the spirit) and my dad would always put the angel/ star on the tree.
This year was our first year with dd and we did exactly that.
ETA: we watch the rockafeller center tree lighting together as a family.

Re: starting holiday traditions with dc?
My DH is also HUGE on decorating the day after Thanksgiving. This makes me laugh because this year we had guests in and didn't want to impose our tradition upon their visit so DH was really bummed that day!

Re: starting holiday traditions with dc?
thanks everyone for sharing your fun traditions! with DD we have started some. DH and I always had gotten each other ornaments each year and now we get one for DD too. We have been going to the same place to get our tree together for the last couple years. I think next year we'll start cutting down our own from a tree farm out east. I'm really trying to think of fun new things to include grandparents/aunts/uncles. I think next year we'll do a Christmas Eve celebration at our house. Or maybe have a tree decorating party a couple weeks before and have a nice dinner? I'm thinking next year of having my Mom sleepover the night before Christmas Eve so DD can do special things with just her and then everyone else can come over later to have an all out celebration. Anyone do anything like that?

Re: starting holiday traditions with dc?
we started one this year...
spend one day in the city - with whomever can make it and wants to go.
we did the tree, fao schwartz, macy's santa and the windows at sax and macy's.... it was fantastic.
on christmas eve at my parent's house, we always open one gift and it's our holiday pj's and we read 'twas the night before christmas'.

With my family we decorate the tree together. We go into the city to see the tree and have dinner. Xmas eve is always at my moms and we open the gifts with the extended family.
Since its DD first xmas and the first year in our new home we are having our parents over for brunch & presents on xmas day. I would like to keep this tradition going.

Christmas Season: Outing to NYC. When DS is old enough Christmas Carol play at theatre 3 in port jeff and Trans Siberean Orchestra at the coliseum.
Christmas Eve, dinner with the inlaws, Christmas day, presents, church and brunch w/ my family. Christmast night, dinner w/ in laws, morning after brunch w/ DH's parents. Yeah, lots of time with the in-laws. Good thing I like them.

Re: starting holiday traditions with dc?
Aside from all these great ideas, what about making a gingerbread house together and then smashing it on Xmas day and eating it? My nieces and nephew do this with their grandparents and LOVE it!

Re: starting holiday traditions with dc?
Baking christmas cookies, Mass on Christmas Eve, Everyone has a specific spot for their gifts under the tree and they have a specific wrapping paper that is just for them. My mom did that and I looked forward to it every year. Also giving ornaments every year so they can each have a collection.

Re: starting holiday traditions with dc?
We decorate gingerbread houses every year with My parents and all the cousins.
We do an annual NYC trip to the Radio City Xmas show and see the tree & such.
Xmas eve we make reindeer food(mix oatmeal and lots of glitter in a ZipLoc), we go outside with the kids and they spread it around the lawn, when It gets dark out, the lawn Sparkles from the street lights and the moon and it attracts the reindeer. The kids love it!

Re: starting holiday traditions with dc?
We do the ornament every year too. Plus my kids make ornaments with their pictures on them every year for the grandparents and for our tree.
My mom's parents used to get my brother and I an advent calendar every year, now my mom does it for my kids. My mom saved them every year and hangs them on the kitchen cabinets, I do the same now.
They get new christmas pj's to wear on Christmas Eve, but they aren't a gift.

We do this too but I use sparkling sugar so that if an animal eats it they don't get sick.
