Starting solids at 4 months
We had our 4 month check up today and our ped sad we should start DD on solids. He told us to do 2-3 tbsp of rice cereal with about 2 oz of a puréed fruit. If you started solids at 4 months....what's the best way to introduce them? Any recommendations on a good fruit to start with? How do you know if your DC is really ready for it? I feel like it might be a little early. Also how did you adjust their bottles during the day? Right now she is getting 3 4oz bottles of BM and I nurse her the rest of the day.
Sorry for all the questions...your feedback is appreciated!

Starting solids at 4 months
If you think it's too early, hold off. There is no need to rush solids, especially if you feel your child isn't ready. We started at 6mo. Skipped cereal and tried avocado first.

Starting solids at 4 months
DD2 is also 4 months, but I am waiting until she is at least 5 months to start cereal. My ped said if you start at 4 months to do cereal for a few weeks and then start w orange vegetables. If you think it is too early then you should wait.

Re: Starting solids at 4 months
I'm guessing you have an older pediatrician based upon those recommendations. Our ped recommended the same thing, but I'd read so much, that I didn't follow his advice. I waited until DD was closer to 6 months and skipped rice cereal.

Starting solids at 4 months
At4 mo we tried rice cereal & regular oatmeal & DD hated it. We then waited a few weeks and tried oatmeal w/banana & she loved it. We gave her that for a little while to practice and then went on to sweet potato's, carrots, peach, etc. Stick to orangey solids for now.

Re: Starting solids at 4 months
Wait. I started ds at 4 months because of his acid reflux. The ped said it would help keep things down. If there isn't a medical reason to start now, dont. Six months would be a better time to start.

Curious why 4 mos is too early if the pediatrician gave the go ahead.
DD is growing quickly and while it's still too early for solids, I'm starting to think about it.

Yeah I was wondering why your ped. suggested 4 months too. DS' ped. was trying to hold us off as long as possible and he didn't get them until 6 months.

Starting solids at 4 months
This been so much research regarding gut health and allowing a "virgin gut" to mature as long as possible before introducing foreign foods, the fact that you breast feed would make me want to wait it out a bit more if possible since your baby is already recieving the optimal nutrition.
Old school peds will still say 4 months but those that more current will say 6 months (unless baby is really hungry....mine held out until just over 5 before he seriously demanded food and we started with avocado, not grains).
Since you're a breastfeeding mommy I would recommend La Leche Leagues guidelines:
http://www.lalecheleague.org/faq/solids.html
and first food recommendations:
http://www.lalecheleague.org/faq/firstfoods.html
I know this is alot of information but grains are also not an ideal first food for breastfed babies, you'll read why in the la leche league first foods link. All the best to you!

Re: Starting solids at 4 months
We started both boys at 4m. THey were hungry kids so they were eager to eat! Took DS2 longer to get hte whole spoon, eating thing down but not too bad.
We started with Oatmeal (never did rice) then went to sweet fruits, apples, peaches (DS1 spit up more with these) bananas, etc. after going through the basic fruits we moved to basic veggies leaving green veggies til later.
With her bottles I would still offer the same, in the beginning they often dont get much from the spoon actually into their bellies, it gets all over but not much inside the mouth! After a week or 2 as she gets better at actually eating, she might start reducing her intake on her own. Just kinda keep track and then you can reduce the oz in her bottle if necessary. She may just start spacing out her feedings more, but taking the same amount.

Re: Starting solids at 4 months
You'll know if your child is ready if she opens her mouth for the food. DS was putting EVERYTHING in his mouth, but when I held a spoon in front of his mouth (not even putting it in) he gagged. He obviously wasn't ready so we tried a week or so later and he did great!

I think its like everything else, everyone has their own opinion/reasoning.
All my friends DC started at 4m-5m. We have a bunch of different Peds, different ages of kids all under 6yo.
I dont find it that surprising that a ped would say 4m. just as I wouldnt find it surprising to hear a dr say wait until 6m.
But I always say, as I do with my own kids, I take the peds advice but I have to make my own decisions based on what I think is best for them, bc I kow them best.

This is all JMO--
My Ped didn't push solids at all. I did a ton of research, and I felt I wanted to wait until my DD showed a real interest in solid foods. She was perfectly satisfied on BM/Formula only until 6+ months.
Their digestive system is also still maturing the first few months of life, so I wanted to wait for that reason as well. If there is any link to allergies, I figured it wasn't worth it to rush solids if down the road that could possibly cause her digestive issues in adulthood.

Re: Starting solids at 4 months
There are a lot of conflicting studies:
6 months for FF babies only has been linked to less obesity (later in life). There is a big study out of Hong Kong that showed no association between start of solids and obesity when controlling for other factors.
4 months has been shown to be linked to fewer food allergies in some studies, and with higher rates of eczema in others.
My ped believed that 4 months was better for us (even after she was well aware of recommendations in view of the data). I trusted her judgement.

ITA. You could find a study that supports any side.

Re: Starting solids at 4 months
If you want to try them, try them!!! If she does not do well just try again another time.
we started with oatmeal at 4 months. DS ate it really well and did good, but as we went on you could tell he didn't like it much. So after a week I tried sweet potato, then made our way onto the other stage 1 veggies, then the fruits.
For the first month we still did oatmeal in the morning veggie at night, then once he started fruits, we got rid of the oatmeal completely.
good luck!

Re: Starting solids at 4 months
Anyway- we started with the rice cereal and Apples. 3 days apples, then 3 days pears, then 3 days nectarines. We did 3 days each to see if a reaction.
After a couple of weeks on rice cereal I called dr and switched to Oatmeal since the rice binded my kids and constipated them.
You would typically start veggies at 5 months.
Have fun and good luck!
I realized she did ask advice, so i take back my orignal statement!!!

Re: Starting solids at 4 months
My ex ped wanted me to start at 4 months. My kids were clearly NOT ready. I went by these guidelines
Baby can sit up well without support. Baby has lost the tongue-thrust reflex and does not automatically push solids out of his mouth with his tongue. Baby is ready and willing to chew. Baby is developing a “pincer” grasp, where he picks up food or other objects between thumb and forefinger. Using the fingers and scraping the food into the palm of the hand (palmar grasp) does not substitute for pincer grasp development. Baby is eager to participate in mealtime and may try to grab food and put it in his mouth.
I started at 6 months and it's been smooth sailing.

Not sure why people are questioning why she is starting solids at 4 months. She didnt ask if that was early enough, she asked for what fruit to start with! !
Yes she did

How do you know if your DC is really ready for it? I feel like it might be a little early.

Re: Starting solids at 4 months
We started at 4.5 months. 1 week on rice but it constipated her so we never went back to that. Then oatmeal for a week Barley for a week We stuck with oatmeal because she liked it best. After all that, we started veges. So that was over 5 months by that point. She got the hang of it quickly. And so far, she's not obese.

Re: Starting solids at 4 months
It is so interesting how doctors say different things. My Dr. said not to introduce solids until 6 months because it is empty calories. She said he would fill up on it, instead of breastmilk.
