I did too. IMO the info on Kelly Mom (which this article references) about solids is outdated. The age at which the gut matures varies from baby to baby, there is no magic that happens when the baby turns 6m, some close at 3m, some close at 12m. If they updated it they would mention the recent research about milk sensitivities and how its related.
There is a lot of info out there the good as well as the bad of introducing solids early. NOTHING IS PROVEN. Its all theory, you just have to take all the info you got, consider your baby, consider your own goals (BF or whatever) and do what you feel is best.
AAP says best to introduce "between 4 and 6 months" and that statement in itself is so unhelpful. I wish they would just say "discuss it with your ped" I think its fine for some babies at 3m, I think its just as fine to wait to introduce solids till 12m. It all depends.
eta: I introduced solids at 3.5m and we never had a problem. Not with chewing, or spit up, or any tummy issues ever.

Re: interesting article about starting solids at 6 months
We waited until 6 months and I am glad that I did. DD is a great eater and never spit up. I have video of our first time feeding her and she opened her mouth and was ready and smiling the whole time!
I have read many articles for and against waiting, I was glad that we waited!

Re: interesting article about starting solids at 6 months
I dont understand why so many people rush their baby to be on "solids (purees or other)".
My ped told me that certain bacterias and enzymes are NOT in the stomach until at least 6 mths. So babies are not protected from germs or have full digestion until then. I agree with this and so I waited until about 8 mths to start some basic purees, and really didnt fully do solids until about one year (other than basic purees).

Re: interesting article about starting solids at 6 months
As with anything, it depends on the baby. We started solids at 4 months. My DD NEEDED solids. Out of nowhere she was pounding bottles like a maniac. She went from 6oz bottles every 3-4hrs to almost 9oz. bottles every (barely) 2hrs. She was SO hungry all the time. She constantly watched us eat and mouthed every time we chewed. So we started her on baby cereal and Stage 1 fruits and veggies and right away she dropped her bottles back down and she chewed and swallowed effortlessly. She LOVED solids.
To counterpoint the article, my DD never had a problem with choking, gas, constipation, vomiting, etc. She literally had no adverse effects from starting solids earlier. At almost 3 years old my DD is healthy and a perfect weight for her frame. I can respect the points the article makes BUT I think that as a parent you need to use your best judgement when it comes to your kids because quite frankly, what's right for one kid might not be right for another. For us, starting my DD earlier on solids was the best thing we did for her and my ped had NO problem with it either.

There is a lot of new evidence that starting solids early can prevent serious food allergies. (not milk allergies those are different) This is why some peds "rush".
Our country's babies are delayed from solids the longest and our children have the highest incident of food allergies. The research is rooted in much deeper correlations and evidence. But this one fact makes sense to me.
In almost any other country, they give tastes of things as soon as baby shows any interest. This is how I did it. This is how my ancestors did it.
IMO its not about how old a baby is, its about their overall readiness, and its something only the primary caretaker and the ped can really know enough to decide whats best for the baby.
If you feel especially righteous about starting solids late, good for you, but its not right for everyone.

Re: interesting article about starting solids at 6 months
Wow! I never knew that waiting until 6 months could prevent allergies, diabetes, obesity, and so on. I just figured the reason to wait was so that the baby can fully digest what's given to them and not choke on it. Pretty interesting. Thanks for sharing

Re: interesting article about starting solids at 6 months
I started my twins at 4 months. Both of them are great eaters, are not overweight in the slightest (they are on the very, very bottom of the percentile chart) and have never had an issue with choking, gagging etc. DS had food allergies, DD does not. DS had digestive issues, DD does not. So who really knows? It depends on the baby IMO.
DD2 is 4.5 months and I haven't started her on solids yet. I am leaning towards waiting till 6 months, mostly because of convenience. Adding yet another task to my day is somewhat daunting at the moment. I have my moments where I think maybe i will start her earlier, but we'll see. The ped had no problem with it either way - starting now or waiting.

I just think as moms, it's a basic instinct to proliferate our choices and rationalize them since we all need to believe we are making the best choices for our kids.

I can attest this does not work! DD wasn't going to sleep through the night until she was d@mn well ready- I could have fed her a steak at bedtime!
Eh to each their own on this subject- no baby ever died from getting solids too early, too late, etc etc. I am sure as adults we don't even know when we first started solids and we are all fine, well adjusted, human beings. You do what you feel is right...that's all.

Re: interesting article about starting solids at 6 months
this is the armadillo article that she references at the end, longer, but more information. armadillo article
i think the bottom line is that you have to make the choice that you feel is right for your own family, like anything else. i just wish doctors explained things differently than they do. i followed the AAP recommendations because i believe in them, and because I knew my daughter was not ready until 6 months. But, obviously, other moms have had success doing earlier. All we can do is look at the research and make up our own minds. Just thought all of this was very interesting

Re: interesting article about starting solids at 6 months
Here is some info about the author (from the website):
I'm a liberal, geeky, pierced and tattooed, earth-loving Pagan. My loves in life, aside from my two exceptionally wonderful children, include coffee, teas, and a wide variety of movies, TV shows and books, but mostly fantasy and sci-fi. I'm a proud kitty-mommy to my beautiful Egyptian Mau, Isis and take pet care about as seriously as kid care. I dabble in graphic design, amateur photography, blogging and am forever researching and aspire to eventually get a grade for my autodidactic obsession.
Not that I don't appreciate Pagans, BUT I still take my medical advice from my pediatrician.
The Kelly mom analysis of the articles are very over-simplified & do not include data such as there is a BIG difference between breast & bottle fed babies esp. with the obesity studies.
My pediatrician was VERY enthusiastic about feeding barley at an early age.. 4 months... because she thinks the avoidance of that caused the SPIKE of celiac disease recently.

But what would discussing it with the ped do, when a ped cannot tell what is going on in the baby's gut? If they have enough enzymes, germ fighting ability etc? That's why blanket statements such as wait until 6 mths or older ARE made. B/c no one really knows so they pick a relatively safe age to be sure MOST babies' guts are ready at that point.

i completely agree in that you should be 100% confident in the advice of your pediatrician, which is why i chose the one that I chose, and why we all chose who we bring our children to...........but, what does the authors bio matter? whether she is pagan, or christian, or jewish, or muslim? does it mean that because she states that she is a pagan, that we don't consider what she is saying, or that she doesn't know what she is talking about? sorry, just a little confused by what you said.
