Starting Table Foods 101

are there any table foods that are BETTER to start with and some that are worse????

we failed with:
pastina (and i'm talking EPIC fail on this one - she tried to claw the stuff off of her tongue, literally)
waffles
american cheese
bread
rice
steamed chicken

i gave american cheese to the sitter today, since she normally has very good luck with feeding her, so we'll see.....but i can't help but feel like there are better things to start with. i can't keep feeding her rice cereal & yogurt forever...

Re: Starting Table Foods 101

give her a chicken bone like a drumstick and let her go at it..... Alexa LOVES that or make ribs and giver her a bone....

Alexa loves string beans cut up or roasted winter squashes in the oven with olive oil and salt just cubed up

Scrambled eggs

pieces of toast

chunks of avocado although I think I have the only baby in the world who doesn't like avocado

She LOVES lentils... I just stew them up with some veggies until they are super mushy

hummus

Re: Starting Table Foods 101

I am laughing at the Pastina because Reilly had stars all over her when we first tried it, she's actually taken a liking to it now but it was comical.

I don't know what is better but this is just what I've given her so far:

chicken nuggets, chopped tiny because i am paranoid
peas
mac and cheese
toast with cream cheese
pancakes
turkey burger
mashed potatoes
american cheese or any cheese
grilled cheese, crusts cut off and chopped up

with regards to all of this food - it's stuff you guys eat too?

like mac & cheese - is it kraft or some 'better' version?

eggs - can i give her the WHOLE egg - meaning yellow & white part? or just whites?

nuggets - home-made or is perdue already breaded nuggets okay??

I'm so jealous! Our DD's are a day apart and mine would gag on every one of those things (except mashed potatoes).

Re: Starting Table Foods 101

Samantha's first real table food was turkey the day after Thanksgiving. I shredded it and warmed it up in gravy. She LOVED it. I also gave her mashed potatos.

If she didn't like the pastina, try another pasta, and just cut it up for her.

Avocado is good to start with too.
Cheese
Peas... they are small and mushy. Samantha LOVES peas and will eat them over anything else I give her. I usually have to give her the protein part of her meal before peas otherwise that would be ALL she would eat.

I started her with mini waffles and mini pancakes which I of course cut up into smaller pieces. I like to use the brand VANS. I also give her french toast sticks by VANS too.

Turkey Meatballs

When I give Samantha mac and cheese, I either make it myself (it's very easy to do), or I give the Annies brand (organic).

Eggs, I started giving her whole eggs before 1 year old only because alot of what she was eating had egg in it anyway. But if you are concerned with an egg allergy, then only egg YOLK, not the whites.

Chicken nuggets, I will either mae them myself, or buy the Earths Best brand which are already fully cooked, but frozen. I cut them up into small pieces.

I give her whatever we're eating for dinner. If i happen to buy organic, that's what we all eat, but i don't buy organic especially for my DD.

My DD loves the tyson nuggets or McDonald's nuggets.

LOL well let me say that she doesn't eat them fully!! I give them to her and she will nibble here and there, I have to still supplement a little with the jars but I am going to stop that soon. I've been expanding her eating lately and she is taking to it. She would rather pick it up and eat it herself then me feed her the pieces.

As for Eggs, I thought they couldn't have egg whites till they were a year? I know my Dr. told me that so I just give her the yolk. Mac and Cheese I make either kraft or the organic one, nuggets I give her the purdue chicken breast nuggets, sometimes i might take the breading off it depends. I am trying to give her what we eat but if I feel it's too hard for her I will make something else for her.

Re: Starting Table Foods 101

mini pancakes? DS LOVES them!

a bagel?

a superpretzel (the frozen ones)?

soup?

Grilled cheese is my standby--I cut it into 4 strips and he eats it all, but lately he's been loving mini pancakes and will eat 6 for lunch or dinner. To stay less messy, I don't put on syrup.

jelly sandwich?

same here.

I'm sooo not the one who can give advise on this topic. Mason is the worst! He gags on everything. I think he would gag on air too Chat Icon Chat Icon

He also refuses table food. You'd think it was poisoned the way he shakes his head and closes his mouth.

Ryan really didn't go for the pastina, but it is pretty bland. He actually started with chicken soup with stars. I just drained all the broth. Now, there basically isn't anything this child won't eat. Just keep on it Jess!!

Re: Starting Table Foods 101

DS is very fussy but this is what he normally eats;

Cheerios
Whole wheat toast or bread with hummus - if I give him bread or bagels I will put hummus on it.
Peas
Shredded cheese - organic - he LOVES his cheese but he gets it everywhere!
Pasta with tomato sauce
Broccoli - sometimes
Banana - he wont eat it if its chopped up or if I try to feed him but if I break a banana in half he will eat it that way - as long as he is in control he is happy - I have to watch him with this in case of large chunks.
Pancakes
Yoghurt the yobaby brand with veg and fruit puree

I tried him with lots of other things but he was not having any of it - he is very adamant about his likes and dislikes

I am going to try him with tofu today.

I remember cheerios were one of the first things DS could manage. The other thing was eggs (I watered them down with water so they weren't so thick). Cheese did work out, but it took a few tries.

Re: Starting Table Foods 101

DS was great with table food, but he never liked pastina. I started him with yogurt, eggs, cut up regular pasta, pieces of meatball/loaf, Eggo waffles, pieces of cheese, grilled cheese, cut up fruit (when he was really young I gave him fruit in those sucker bags). He pretty much ate anythng we ate, I just cut it up for him.

I have an almost 10month old who will try most foods I'm eating. I'm paranoid about choking though and give him tiny tiny pieces. what size is everyone giving? like that of a pea? this is stressing me out!

The only way both my kids enjoyed pastina was if I stirred in some jarred baby food veggie (usually carrots or squash), like a "sauce". They couldn't get enough of it this way!

I agree and also, it's so common for them to not only dislike table food the first couple of times, but to utterly despise it and have a complete meltdown about it. You may have to try the same food 20 times before they start to accept it. I wouldn't consider any of the foods you tried a failure (no matter how bad the reaction) unless it's been tried a huge bunch of times, like a seriously huge bunch of times.....consistency is key, like anything else as they approach toddlerhood. They come around eventually. Chat Icon

I ended up putting in some lite butter and parm cheese and finally she liked it!

yes - she's just over 11 months....

i just feel like we're so behind, because of the concern of allergies and then the viruses' she's had...

i'll wait for her 12 month appointment before I go hardcore..

Re: Starting Table Foods 101

I wouldn't worry about it at all. My DS took to table food right away at around 10 months, but my DD took much longer to adjust. She seemed to "hate" table food till just around 12 months or so, and then she literally just changed overnight and now she eats anything. Your DD will probably end up loving a lot of the foods she's rejecting now, when she's ready.
