I agree with Jess.. I feel that eating meat and wearing fur are two different things. People don't eat meat as a fashion statement or to show their financial status.. there really is absolutely no need for those animals to be skinned because some selfish humans.
i think it is the meat eaters who justify their eating who use this excuse...
Ultimately...you do not HAVE to eat meat..It is a choice. Just like wearing fur..

unless you eat chinchillas, ferrets and minks. I still don't see it being the same things. I eat very little meat, but I do eat them, I tried to be a vegetarians once due to the fact that I am such an animal fanatic, but I got so sick and lathargic I end up in the hospital. Some people actually NEED to have meat in their system. However, I will never wear fur, because there are other ways I can keep warm. .. but I do respect your opinions.

it isn't really my opinoin....i am really playing devils advocate... I think this is the way vegans would see it. And in our modern day society...i am sure there are ways to get around not NEEDing meat. As i said before... i eat turkey and chicken. On rare occassions i will eat a hamburger, even rarer will i eat a steak. I wear leather And i make no excuses for it. This is my choice.
ETA...but i also think if i had to kill the animal that i ate....my diet would be different! As probably MANY.

it's like 70 degrees outside - i can't imagine you saw someone in a fur coat today in this weather???
' I dont know either but there should have been some kind of warning on your post Jessica - about the graphic video.
There should have been some kind of warning, I cant stand seeing anything about harming animals - this was a horrible link.

I think Any type of animal cruelty is completely disgusting. Just playing devil's advocate, didn't watch the video.
Do any of the people who think this is sooo wrong own a leather pocketbook or leather shoes? Isn't that the same as having a fur coat?
And when you eat meat, no one is forcing you to eat meat. It is not necessary to live, you can live on veggies and soy products.

and let's not forget all the products we use that were tested on animals
make-up, hair dye, sprays, lotions etc
testing on animals IMO is far worse than anything i have ever seen

Posted by Lolita4Life i never saw it as an option for me (not eating meat) since i dont eat veggies, but perhaps its just time i just adjust my eating habits towards eating meat substitutes. (is that the right word?)
this has always been my issue.... I HATE veggies... I rarely eat red meat I eat no fish, no lamb
I eat turkey and chicken...
if i didn't i really don't know what i would eat
I have the same issue- if I could give up meat, I would. I hate veggies, I have such issues with textures of foods and I just don't know what I'd eat. But regardless, I will never wear fur. I see no need for it.

Re: Still Happy You Are Warm In Your FUR Coat???
I'm just going to add that there are humane ways of killing animals, and inhumane ways, and fur and veal harvesting are both inhumane, so I don't think it makes someone a hypocrite if they eat other meat but not veal or wear leather but not fur.
I don't really think anything like this makes anyone a hypocrite. Because you use animals in some way (we all do whether we know it or not) doesn't make you a hypocrite if you want to address a different way of using animals which is completely inhumane.
Also, people who are vegetarians, or partial vegetaraisn or vegans do it for completely different reasons, so I don't think it's fair to call anyone a hypocrite in this situation. I have a friend who won't eat mammals because he feels they are just too close to us in the animal kingdom, but he eats birds, fish, etc.
I don't think someone who eats meat but says "fur is evil" is a hypocrite. Many famrs today have developed advanced methods aimed at killing the animals in a humane way. It's the circle of life, animals eat other animals, but it is not neccesary to torture the animal before you eat it or wear it.

animals eat animals because they have NO CHOICE ...
we do.
WHY kill an animal if you don't have to?
eta...and IMO i can certainly see the hypocracy

I think the issue with fur, or one of the issues is that the animals are tortured in order for us to get it. There's no slot of the neck quick and relatively painless death. getting the fur in tact requires torturing the animal.
And no, you don't need meat to live. And I know a lot of people who say they want to be vegetarians but they can't..if you really wanted to, you probably could. I became a vegetarian about 10 years ago. It was very hard at first but now I can't imagine eating meat. If you really want to you can, it's a sacrifice. For some people it might be too big a sacrifice if they have dietary issues, etc, but you can definitely get used to veggie burgers and soy bacon if you try.

Re: Still Happy You Are Warm In Your FUR Coat???
Marymoon..... i agree 110%
i think people are missing the point. this wasnt meant to be a thread on eating meat vs. wearing fur...... i just posted it so people couold watch (or try to) and see their reactions. perhaps it would pursude some people who DO own fur or are indifferent about it to think twice next time.
marymoon brought up my main point in the meat vs fur arguement though. at least if you want to eat meat you can get it from places that kill their animals humanely. they have all that kind of stuff........... but have you ever heard of an animal killed humanely for fur? i dont think so.
well, like i said i hope it strikes a chord with someone and makes them do something about it in their life somehow. whether its throwing a fur away, not wearing /purchasing fur in the future or so forth.
at least for me it has. i already knew id never wear fur, but today i gave up meat as well.

i think that the above is a lot coming from you jess.... especially how passionately you speak about animals... killing is killing and if you think itis humane, maybe you should look up some video footage on it and see if it looks humane to you. I have actually seen some documentaries on how they treat cows that are raised on these slaughter farms....humane isn't the word i would use.
because of our society, we don't have to kill ANYTHING making it quite easy for us to wear leather, wear fur, and eat meat. So if you complain about fur....it is kinda hypocritical. And the day you make the average joe actually kill for their food or leather/fur products, will maybe be the day people stop wearing/eating it. humane killing..... now ain't that a funny statement

and never understood how people could say killing Any animal for food is "humane"-for many reasons, but Mostly-- How do you know? unless you kill every cow that you eat yourself, you cant guarantee that. and i've seeen those Documentaries too- it definitely didnt scream "Humane" to me in any way, shape or form.

I don't think someone who eats meat but says "fur is evil" is a hypocrite. Many famrs today have developed advanced methods aimed at killing the animals in a humane way. It's the circle of life, animals eat other animals, but it is not neccesary to torture the animal before you eat it or wear it.
But sadly, most farmers and factory farms do not kill their animals (or raise their animals) in humane ways. It is not 'financially advantageous' for most farmers to raise or treat animals humanely - it would cost them $$$ and cut into their profit. Plus there are little or no regulations regulating how farm animals are treated (unlike pets).
For many animals raised for meat or dairy, their lives are worse than their deaths. It really is sickening the misery that these poor animals are put through so humans can eat meat when we could just as easily survive on vegetables, fruit, legumes, etc. I think it is extremely hypocritical to lash out at fur wearers while eating meat - both fur animals and food animals are sentient beings who feel pain and do not deserve a life of misery.
