no, the point of the thread hasn't been lost
but a new aspect has been added
which is relevant to the thread.
you want to sit there and condemn people for wearing fur because its inhumane,
but in reality it is also inhumane the way animals are treated for their meat, even for their milk.
so before you start pointing fingers, maybe people should be educated on ALL the aspects of animal cruelty. otherwise, don't judge.
and if the way cows are killed is humane, then maybe we should be using these methods for the people on death row.

I couldn't agree more- and since I happen to wear fur in the winter- I am automatically disliked anyway

Jess, I agree...I WILL NEVER WEAR FUR, but I have to disagree in saying that I dislike someone for wearing it. I didnt have to watch to view to the video to know how cruel it that they treat these animals just for the "fur".
I just think everyone is entitled to theri opinions, and evryone made theirs and lets NOT bash people for having theirsChat Icon

People kept their mouths closed throughout history when major atrocities occured and still occur against animals AND people. Ultimately we have one choice. - to live life as we see fit and let the ultimate judge decide our fate when the time is right.

Re: Still Happy You Are Warm In Your FUR Coat???

Red, well we can talk about all aspects if youd like..... but i just was hoping to have people watch the video and get their reactions.

i never said i agree with killing animals for food.... i feel like you perhaps think im advocating for killing animals for food purposes when im just saying i can understand it more than killing a ferret for a fur jacket.

it takes 200 chinchillas to make a coat.
one cow to feed god knows how many people.
(not that that makes it OK, but its somethign to look at as well)

How do you even know if their coat is REAL anyway, when you start to judge? If i saw someone on the train with a Pink dog, i might think less of them for putting chemicals in their dogs fur- the fur that the dog licks. Now, you know that you didnt put that type of dy on your dog, but other people dont know that. So why make snap judgements on people you dont even know?

anyway, i understand what youre saying, and i dont wear fur either, BUT i dont think either one of us are in a position to judge anyone on Anything, and i dont think its right to get on a soapbox about this issue, and try to make some people feel like pieces of sh!t, when you yourself are just as guilty as they are- animals are killed for your own personal gain. And unless you were the one that personally and HUMANELY killed the animals you eat, you cant fight the fact that its just as horrible.

Re: Still Happy You Are Warm In Your FUR Coat???

I'm choosing to not watch this video because I'm already vegan, already know of the cruelty, and see no point in unnecessarily upsetting myself bc I'm already a "believer." After being a complete non-leather wearing vegetarian for over 16 years though, I can tell you that I get a lot further in advocating on behalf of animals by not shoving this information down people's throats when not asked. You get a lot further when people who love animals ask questions about your beliefs. JMHO. Also Jes, I remember in an old post you said something about you fainting and getting emaciated or something last time you tried to go veggie, but I have to say, you live in an IDEAL neighborhood to become a veggie and eat healthy, so I really don't think you becoming a healthy vegetarian should be that big of an issue regardless of your tastes. I'm happy you finally took the leap. If you need recommendations on restaurants/stores near your house, send me an FM. Good Luck!

I couldn't even watch that. 2 seconds into it, it was off. Things like that upset me too much. While I won't criticize somebody that does wear fur, I myself would never EVER wear it.

Jess....do you think you would feel differently about eating meat if you had to kill it yourself, gut it and then cook it?

I think if most people had to do that for themselves...there would be more vegans of the world

I disagree. If we had to kill our own animals, we would be desensitized to it. When I worked in Mexico, not one child in the orphanage had a problem with killing the pigs, chickens, etc. for food, clothing, whatever they needed. The bigger sin there was to waste food.

I'm definitely getting flamed for this one...I believe that humans were biologically meant to be omnivoures (even thought I was a vegetarian for 2 years) and that wearing fur, leather, etc is fine for the people that want to wear it. I think that the more & more we use synthetics in our lives, the more we open up ourselves to toxins. etc.

completely agree.. I will NEVER see eating meat and wearing fur as the same... there just isn't a reason in the world that you need to wear fur. This is how I feel, and I am entitled to it.
I do not judge random fur wearing people on the street. I do cringe at the sight of the coat, but not at the person.

Re: Still Happy You Are Warm In Your FUR Coat???

I don't eat meat, but you could eat say, only kosher meat because then you have certain guarantees or suppossed guarantees about the way in which the animal was killed.

I'm not an expert on farming practices, but I don't think that farmers go out of their way to kill the animals in a really inhumane way as in fur, and I believe there are many farms that use more humane slaughtering practices.

And while I think some people would become vegetarians if they had to kill their own food, many probably wouldn't. If we were used to being in a society where we had to kill our own food, we'd do it, just like our ancestors did.

ETA: I think the only hypocritical thing would be if lolita were saying "Don't wear fur" and she wore fur.

Re: Still Happy You Are Warm In Your FUR Coat???

marymoon..... thanks, i feel the same. i dont see how im a hypocrite, but whatever. like you said, im not saying 'dont wear fur' but wearing it myself nor am i saying 'dont eat meat' yet eating it myself.

neenie.... i completely understand your point, i dont feel like im on a soapbox though. and as far as when i judge a fur wearer--when i see it and i said i dislike them. i cant help it. its how i honestly feel and that is just me. everyone judges others in their own way or for their own reasons. that just happens to be mine. id like to say that isnt so, but i'd be lieing.
(p.s. its pretty easy to tell the difference between a real fur or a fake when youre close up... at least for me it is)

Susan.... yes, i was all sickly in the past when i gave up meat, but since i DO live in this town it is really easy now. or at least i hope it will be. there are places like Sunac, SParkys, etc that all seel organic/soy products. this town is VERY catersome to vegetarians, so i am hoping this wont be as hard for me as it was last time.
i went to Sunac today and got a non-meat burrito! im on my way!

Lolita,

I eat tons of meat subsitutes. I like morningstar farms, smartdeli, yves, boca. I love to use morningstar veggie crumbles to make tacos (just subsitute one package crumbles for one lb chomeat), or making veggie sausage and peppers.

The veggie breakfast sausage links with a little syrup on them taste just like the "real" thing

yeah, they're easier to get used to mixed in with something first. I'm glad you're giving it another try. When you go veg, you have to really make sure you get enough protein, and these meat subsitutues are a great source, as are rice and beans (which together form a complete protein), lentils, peanuts, etc

Re: Still Happy You Are Warm In Your FUR Coat???

There's a really interesting book out now called "The Dilemma of the Omnivore." They had an excerpt from it in the NYT magazine a few weeks ago. It was pretty interesting as the author tells of finally wanting to own up to being a meat eater and going out and hunting and gathering his own food and preparing it from start to finish. Once you take out the middle man (industry) it puts a completely different take on things.

On a side note with the whole fur wearing thing, I didn't click on the link for the video because I saw it was from PETA. I am all for the ethical treatment for animals. I am a meat eater and my wife is a lacto-ovo vegetarian since birth. But I have no respect for PETA as an organization. They are too often reported as going to the extremes for getting their message out. I have read about numerous accounts of members of PETA commiting acts of violence as well. They are radicals and often too extreme. I am not into wearing furs at all but just because one video shows horrible methods of killing these animals doesn't mean it's necessarily done that way everywhere. Just playing devil's advocate here. This is a really tough/sensitive issue and you really have to educate yourself before you start making accusations.

Re: Still Happy You Are Warm In Your FUR Coat???

I am an animal lover. I mean, to the point of where I almost got killed on the Southern State because someone left a puppy next to the guardrail, and I stopped in the left lane and almost got rear ended. (By the way, that puppy now resides in a million dollar home in East Islip)

But seriously, I eat meat, I wear leather, and I dont think I could give it up. There are degress of what people think is cruel and what isnt.

Lolita, have you seen the way they kill chickens? Their heads are ripped off as they are held by their feet on a rotating assembly line. Are you going to stop eating chicken now?

It is the food chain, the cycle of life. I feel more for domesticated animals, then I do for chickens, cows, etc. They are bred for our survival, and if you choose to live on vegetables, than I commend those who are that commited.

But for me, eating a peice of chicken, and an abandoned puppy, are two different things.

I watch shows on Discovery, NGC, and see how animals survive in the wild, and I see no difference than a cow being killed for meat, and a lion killing an antelope in Africa so it can eat. Neither way is humane, but this is how we surive, and thats how the Lion in Africa survives.

This was very well put. I don't really want to comment on this issue becuase its so controversial and sensitive. Personally, I would never wear fur. I eat very little meat.
Our ancestors hunted and killed and prepared their own meat/leather/fur, etc. I doubt you would have seen a vegan in "caveman" times.
If you look strictly at human traits, we are "programmed" to be omnivores. Our teeth are designed for both meat and plant materials. We require certain nutrients that come from both plants and animals. It is only recently that this has become more of a moral issue. One of the major differences between then and now is that in the past EVERY part ofthe animal was used. The meat was eaten, the leather was used to make things, the fur was worn to survive cold winters, and even internal organs were used for things - like bladders for water storage.
I always find myself very torn on this because of the things I listed above. I think very scientifically, but at the same time love animals and have a hard time thinking of the torture they are put through.
